MRSA and more
My computers ( both) are still sick ( well one is dead). It's VERY frustrating. I have no idea what is going to happen with this update. I could easily get the boot, freeze, get an error message, have the computer just turn off randomly, get a message that pops up over and over and lot's of other fun stuff.
But I am going to give it a try.
MRSA
"Safeway" has had a MRSA epidemic. In true Safeway fashion, they don't start fixing things until well after major damage has been done. MRSA as you may have seen in the news is a staph infection that does not respond to treatment. We have had three kids in our classroom alone with MRSA. I am not a paranoid person. In fact, I am impatient with people who think they have every new thing on the news. I wasn't even worried about it, but when I got a weeping sore on my ankle I thought I should go to the Safeway nurses. Their advice was to call my Dr. and have a culture done. So I did. My Dr.'s office had a triage nurse return my call. The stupid receptionist had never heard of MRSA even though it has been all over the news and she works at a Dr.'s office. I get a call back from the nurse
Nurse: So, this is about MRSA?
Me: yes
Nurse in VERY sarcastic snotty tone: SOOOO, you watched the news last night I suppose?
Me taken aback: No, I work in a residential treatment center. I work with kids. We have an epidemic there. Plus, I work with kids who may have compromised immune systems due to drug use, jail, and the streets. So if I have it, I can't work.
Nurse: Look, I have worked in nursing homes, hospitals and all kinds of places with MRSA my whole career. I never got it. Just use good hand washing techniques :annoyed sigh:
Me: I don't think your understanding me. I do wash my hands. And I am clean and careful. I had a sore that was oozing and now it's not. I went to THE NURSES and they told me to call YOU. We have a MRSA epidemic, if I have it, I can't work.Nurse: I KNOW THAT. And you know it's funny because I had a call from a school nurse today about a child's rash. A sore or a rash is probably NOT MRSA. But if you insist on having it cultured ( said in bitch tone) you can, but not until next week.
Me: No forget it. And these are NOT school nurses, they work for the treatment facility, and we have had over 10 cases of MRSA where I work, so it isn't the same, but whatever.

OMG. I was so hoping I had MRSA ( got it checked at acute care, where a friend works) just so I could throw it back in nurses face. When I called the acute care she told me to come in right away.
A doctor looked at it and said since it wasn't weeping anymore he couldn't do a culture, but it didn't look like it to him. He told me how to treat it and said if it got worse to come back.
Like I said, I was almost disappointed. I wanted to have the worst case of MRSA ever documented. I wanted to be near death ( but not die of course). I wanted to be on the news and tell the story of the mean nurse and how I could have died.
I wanted Safeway to be on the news and say " Our nurses did the right thing, we are so happy our star employee is going to live"
Even though I hate Safeway sometimes.
I was hoping both Safeway and the Dr.'s office would settle my law suit out of court and I would have billions ( well millions).
But alas, I have no MRSA. I could still get it though, so there's hope.
In other news, I got the biggest pumpkin from my pig farmer/acute care worker/ pumpkin grower friend. I told her I needed a big pumpkin for work. OMG this is 70 to 100 pounds. I was thinking like a ten pounder.
I can't wait to bring it to work and upload pictures. The boys are going to be so excited.
Jennie has updated here. She tells about her week in Cape Town. She also tells about her independent study project, but she leaves things out. She told me she would most likely be working with prisoners. Most likely rapists and their victims. She also told me she might be living near the prison.
Then she got mad when I acted worried. ( Note to mom, this is not the same as you worrying about my non- MRSA) She said I ruined it now, when she was all excited.
Daughters = drive me crazy.
Matt got two midterm grades back from his first semester at college. Both A's. I'm relieved and proud. You never know how they are going to adjust and balance fun with school when they first go.
He stepped up. I knew he would ( not really, but still).
If I don't get around, sorry. I am glad I got to type this much. I will be checking my comments at the library and this computer when it's behaving. So please leave me some.
It's always a highlight of my day. Sad but true.
And please go to Jennie's site and tell her I am NORMAL for worrying about the prison thing. She also tells of SA. TV.
Interesting stuff

Oh, you were nicer to Nurse Ratchet than I would have been! What a beyotch! How can she downplay MRSA like that? People are dying of the damned stuff! It is present at your place of employment, for crying out loud! That woman is whacked! I am glad you don't have it! Be careful! Safeway doesn't sound too safe!
Glad Matt is doing great at school. I will go chide Jennie (nicely) for being annoyed with you!

Fortunately I got cured of my skin eating infection, it started small and started to spread. Fortunately it was treatable by using neosporin cream, but my hand looks like it was scalded....(happened years ago but the scar remains)
Some nurses make you grr, because absolute power corrupts absolutely...
Time to visit Jennie's blog, see ya....
we've had lots of cases of staff infections around here... but I don't know that its the MRSA kind that you speak of... Roxie's daughter, in fact, has had it in this sore on her chest TWICE last school year... and since then there have been sprinkled cases everywhere.... I haven't had it in my house yet.
I will go to Jennie's because you are right, that is a real reason to be concerned, not like you are overreacting and such... RAPISTS???? She's a cute girl. She's a strong girl. They will like her.
I don't understand the MRSA thing. Here we've had schools with a couple cases each. I guess I thought if it was an epidemic, more people would be getting it in each infected area. Glad you didn't have it though, it doesn't sound like fun.
Oh !! Your blog is really amazing !! I am interest your blog !! ><
Laura it is okay to worry. That is a mom job. I worry everyday when my daughter goes to work at the prison. I also worry when my daughters go to school. You never know. I wish my husband was near to fix your computer.
I'm glad you don't have MRSA, even though it would have been nice to give a nice fat "I told you so" to that nurse. A teen in Virginia died of it recently. I'm thinking there's a newer more virulent strain of it out there. Some people seem to live with MRSA for years and others are getting it and dying quickly. It's astonishing that a doctor's receptionist had never heard of it.
I say we roll up on that bitchy nurse and do a drive-by snotting - that is dump a whole bunch of snot & germ covered tissues in her lap. We've had a NASTY stomach flu epidemic going around my school. I could get some PRIME germs for her, if you'd like. And since I work in a Child Care Center, we've got plenty of snot to go around. Let me know. I got your back, sista!
I had an infection like that some years ago. It attacked the whole area of my inner-thighs so bad I couldn't walk for days until my doctor finally got ahold on some antibiotics. It was new then so no one knew what it was when I first got it which is why it had time to get so bad.
The pain was horrible. I thought I'd be doomed to crawl around the house forever. (& it wasn't even much of a crawl, it was a new twist on the worm).
RYC: I love reading Jen's blogs. I've always wanted to go to Africa.. & now.. I'm thinking not. Lol. Except maybe for the great picatures.
& as far as that featured thing goes- I'm thinking I never want to be featured. I don't think I have to worry about that though. ;P
Have a good weekend.
I love the picture of the crying machine.
I'm going over and check Jennie's site now.
LOL at your wish for a dreaded disease, but I know that feeling...wanting to be able to say, "I told you so."
When I was a little girl, I remember my dad had a staph virus and he was sick as a dog!! It was terrible. And I can't believe that nurse poo poo you off the phone. Drives me nuts.
I guess I am one of those paranoid people.
I work in a hospital and you just can't get away from people (mostly co-workers) who do not practice good hygeine. Blech.
Well, I'm glad you really didn't have it and hope you don't get it (unless you can use it to throw it back in the bitchy nurse's face).
Damn, you make me want to go out and contract MRSA and come give it to you just so you'll feel justified. After you get done feeling like crap of course. But maybe the millions you'll be obligated to share with me will make us both feel better. Hey, it's worth a shot.
You are a riot. AND... Yeah. EVERY mother in her right MIND would worry about Jennie being so close to psycho/sociopathic rapists. Perhaps, though, she thinks that since her MOM can work with troubled young men, why not her? [shrug] Girls love to prove their mothers wrong. Which reminds me. I should start a disinformation campaign with my own daughter now so that she never wants to hang out with freaky boys. Hmmm... MUST tell her that every boy is AWESOME so she can come home from school one day saying, "Um. Mother. [channelling Hillary Banks' voice] Boys are SO gross! Oh. My. Gosh! What were you thinking?!"
I was hoping you could be awarded the billions, not the millions.
"Take two aspirin and never me call again!"
I"ve been enjoying Jennie's postings, but I guess I have been somewhat of a lurker.
Prisoners? Yikes. That would not bring joy to a mother's heart.
Staph infections are nothing to fool around with, that's for sure. I would be pretty annoyed at the attitude.
Go try to get another infection. I want you to give it to the mean nurse and THEN sue for bajillions! Glad you raised such RESPONSIBLE and SMART children! You are great mom!
That nurse was an outright bitch-how dare she?! Maybe she hadn't gotten laid in a while-hehe.
Yes, the one that is usually on my xanga, her pic was on it Thursdays post. It is so scary. In fact a few weeks ago 2 inmates were working in the field and stoled an officers vehicle and ran her over. I was freaking out, my daughter got the call at college to rush to work. The officer died, she was married and had 2 grown children like 24 and 20 ish. She was 59. It was at the wynne unit in Huntsville Texas. Just tell Jennie you love her and to be aware all the time of her surroundings. Matt too. Expunge will take care of you.
I just learned what MSRA is from your blog. I live under a rock. Actually, I just don't get much news beyond Dan's blog haha. That nurse/receptionist combo sounds like my doctor's office. I need a job like that. I want to be paid money to be a bitch.
If it makes you feel any better, it's not like Jennie is living near a Detroit prison. That's scary. Or working with hillbillies.
I for one am glad that you do NOT have MRSA even if it would show that stupid meanine head nurse - I will instead just hope for instant Karma to come and smack her in the face.
Can't wait to see the pumpkin!
OMG! I swear we work at the same place!
We've had an 'outbreak' of MRSA---but our always intelligent administration decided not to tell the workers because they didn't want to cause a panic. When I found out about it, I almost flipped the whole building on its side. I have a 15 month old daughter at home, and certainly did not want to take the chance of bring that home to her!! Clean hands and proper hygiene---duh! Maybe that nurse should get MRSA, she probably wouldn't be able to diagnose herself!! what a wench.
That MRSA would scare the cr-p out of me. It makes me grateful that all we had at work was sewer gas poisoning us for a year.
ryc--Yes it did smell but they told us that it smelled because we didn't use the thermostat correctly and that the smell was our trash can.
i didn't read the other posts as there were too many but with that being said, i hope i'm not repeating what everyone else said:
i'm sorry you don't have MRSA but, ten i'm glad you don't because it would rot if you were very sick or, at worst, died.
RYC: nice to "see" you, too!!
I got a staph infection in my leg this summer after an injury, and had to be on two rounds of the antibiotic they use for anthrax! It was no fun, believe me, and it still swells up and scares me every so often. Just because I had a little eeensy weeensy scrape where the major blow/bruise was. I swear my leg will never look the same and will always be mishapen. I am glad you don't have MRSA!
Except for that bitchy nurse. Maybe she will catch it.
As a health care worker, the MSRA epidemic is all my fault. I'll try to do better from now on
