  • Singin in the car, A social commentary

I was minding my own business at a stop light on the way home from work when I noticed the guy next to me was singing, loudly and badly to his music.  He was also bopping to it.  Bopping is like dancing, but in a sitting position.  Anyway, I stared thinking he would stop.  But he was in a world of his own and kept going.

Now I am a car singer myself, but I always stop when I am right next to someone at a light.  Or I least tone it down.  I think that's proper car singing etiquette.  It's a different story when your with other people in the car, then you are a group, having fun, but when your alone it looks dumb.  I remember singing to the kids in the car when they were little.  They would be in their little car seats, in the back of a van where you couldn't see them.  So then it looked like I was singing Raffi songs to myself.  That's the time when you hope people notice the baby on board bumper sticker.

Sometimes I almost sing at the grocery store.  I try not to, but sometimes a little humming comes out when I'm deciding between Captain Crunch with or with out crunch berries.  It's usually some Carpenters song.  I'll be checking out the female products and find myself singing "  Just like me, they long to be, close to you."  Then I want to explain to the women next to me that I was not serenading the Tampax, in fact I really hate that song.  But instead I say smugly "  Oh that's right I don't need these anymore, I forgot"  Ha!

Anyway, the whole point of this entry is there are places and times to sing and places and times to not sing.  Please tone it down when your next to me at a stop light, and don't bop, it makes you look stupid.

  • I sing everywhere, it just comes out,
but i will try to remember not to be
    a public bopper:girldance30:

  • Yeah, I don't need those anymore either. I guess the ablation did the job for ya?

  • :redcar21: I'm a bopper too. With & without kids in the car. Fortunately, I sound pretty darn good, but ALWAYS keep my windows rolled up when I'm doing it, so as not to disturb other drivers... ;) LOL I catch myself singing in the grocery store and smiling when I hear other people doing it too. Whether they sound good or not, I find it kinda cool. Happy people make me smile. Plus, when I'm into a tune... I so don't care if I look like an idiot. More for the world to smile/laugh at, I say. I'm a fool for music and I don't mind it a bit. :yay19:

  • I like your Buckwheat profile pic...that is Buckwheat isn't it??..LOL...

  • I still get to purchase those little wrapped, pink plastic novelties! :darkcloud26:  Shall I start serenading them with, "When Will I See You Again?"  :lol29:

I sing in the car, too, but like you, try to stop if I think someone is watching.  I hate forgetting only to look over and see someone grinning.  Or worse yet, honking and laughing!  :rollinpin11:

Wow, Carpenters, Cousin Barry - tell me you like the Bee Gees, too, and we are soul sisters for life!  :yougogirl23:

  • I can't help it either... I am a chronic bopper/singer. Its from 4 years in show choir. If I know the words, I sing it - whether I like the song or not! And I don't care anymore if I look stupid. In fact, sometimes I bop extra hard TRYING to look stupid, because I love the reactions I get from the other drivers.

    :muhahaha14::zanygrin16:

  • i am a really bad car singer.  and i am a bopper too. but i cant help myself.  lol

  • I stop when someone pulls up too..................but MAN am I ever good when no one's around!  You should hear me hit the Whitney Houston notes..............like "I will always Love you!"...................I'm sure there are dogs following me down the highway!  :lol29:

  • proper car singing etiquette -- bopping etiquette! You must have gone crazy in Nashville. Actually bopping is hitting someone with a sharp motion to the head. I am sure it is called bancing if you do it in the front seat and jancing if you do it in the backseat. Now if you do it and there is no singing or music, it is just called bouncing.

  • I am a car singer from way back. :redcar21: But I do try to refrain from bopping if someone is looking. I did get caught singing in the grocery store once. I looked up and a guy was laughing at me because I was singing along to the piped in music. I was so embarrassed but I tried to act like it didn't bother me and kept singing.

  • I don't sing, but I bop in public places. :P Usually, it evolves into real dancing, though....

  • ok, so i have a question, not entirely on topic. what exactly is the purpose of the "baby on board" sticker? i have yet to understand it. enlighten me :)

  • the only time i care what the other guy is singing is when his music drowns out mine! :)

  • I don't usually sing very loudly or bop very noticeably in the car, but I'm at risk of dancing exhuberantly in public.  Especially when some song plays on the Muzak that I can two-step to.

  • My fav time to sing is when I'm taking a dump. :question27:

  • I love to sing in the car, but I try to tone it down too.

  • HEY (pulse) I featured that web site tonight:cheers15:

  • You are so right and 2 thumbs up, but down to the idiot who was acting worse than a child.  There is nothing like singing in the shower

  • Ha~~~ I am definitely a car singer..anywhere singer for sure. Now I've got a crooner in the backseat who has definite opinions about which songs I can/cannot sing outloud.

RYC:  I totally appreicate your "non-comment" comment".  I don't usually write about such myself but felt it worthy of mentioning in the blog today.  I'll inquire should I pen about American Idol! Have a good one~

  • I'm am admittedly a bopper, but technically it's bangin' since it's usually rock, punk or alternative that I"m listening to -- we don't "bop" -- :muhahaha14:

  • I was reading about a bride who was hoping her inlaws would like the karioke part of her family. Probably worst than singing in the car is being force to sing karioke in public in front of strangers....

Those sneaky marketeers play singing music on purpose to get you into a good mood (no wonder women enjoy shopping) I am glad I don't have to shop too often but who knows what transformation will come over me when I go shopping.

I wonder if Matt would cringe if he had to give you a private concert of his singing? Or visa versa? I don't think my family has ever hear a solo concert done by myself, and probably will never happen unless someone marries a karioke nut....

  • Jeeeeeez I'm sorry. I'll never bop again.

  • My GOD! We are sooooooooooooo much alike, it's like reading my own entry! :lol29:

  • trust me... nobody wants to hear me sing!... PERIOD!  :muhahaha14:

  • Thanks for the laugh. I needed one! :lol29:

  • ryc:  lol...that's what i call my second job.  i have a business in the home otherwise.

  • I'd rather they be bopping than picking their nose like the guy next to me the other day!!! :redcar21:

  • Your American Idol comment made me crack up. :)

    <3

  • :catdance1: :dognod25: I sing in the stores, cars, on the phone to my friends I sing to my cat and dog and make them dance.  MAKE LIFE FUN!!! :lol29: :girldance30: :girldance30: :girldance30:

Next time someone calls trying to get you to give money sing to them...they will hang up. :rofl17:

  • There are certain stores that have really awesome music.  It just sucks when all of your old-time favorite groups are now shopping oldies.  So yeah, I find myself singing along with the music in stores, and I am going to use the "old woman" card every damn chance I get.  I dare anyone to make me stop.  ;)

  • I LOVE going nuts in the car over what's playing on the radio.  But I keep my windows down so as not to disturb others.

  • Or at least keep the windows rolled up. Singing in the tampax aisle? LOL.

  • I'm with you. You never know what song will come out of my mouth. I might start singing anything for old religious hymns to disney. I guess it's a brain thing.

  • humming is noise, please don't do it, people say to me.  I hav e to remember to stop..its so natural to hum or sing what is in your head.  We have a janitor at work who whistles.  I love it.  But then, again, he only whisles in to empty the trash and then he is out.  it would drive us all crazy if it was all day long!!!!

  • I usually keep my singing to the shower or occasionally when one of my girls isn't feeling too good, but they have to be really sick, otherwise they realize how bad a singer I am. :dognod25:

  • You can't stop my bop!

And how can you even consider Cap'n Crunch without Crunchberries?

  • oh I believe in singing frequently and spontaneously for everyone.. even those voice impaired...

its not oprah yet..I have to get through to the top 9 ...they are auditioning 3 cities...

idea, patent, presentation and having your numbers down will get you there...

my numbers arent down ..so I have work to do!

  • i get into my music in the car, but i never sing loud enough for the person in the car next to me hears me!!! lol...  the car and the treadmill are really the only times i get to listen to music, so i throughly enjoy it when i do:)

  • Sometimes while driving a song will come on I used to do a cheerleading dance to and I'll do the arm motions and sing along. It's really bad at stop lights because if my favorite part comes on I have to do it...there's no way around it...

    :cheer10:

  • My favorite time of the day is my commute to and from work.  I crank up the music and sing at the top of my lungs.  I cannot sing worth a darn, but it's so therapeutic.  Luckily, I don't have any stop lights where people would be next to me. I am too embarrassed to let someone see me sing (or heaven forbid HEAR me sing!!)

I hope you are having a humpalicious hump day!! :muhahaha14:

    Alicia

  • If you see me sittin' at a stop sign singin' and boppin', just JOIN ME and SING ALONG!!!!

  • I love singing and bopping, but don't currently have a car, so I sit in the parking lot, pretending I'm in a car.

  • Hah! Quite a few of the commenters are telling you to take a flying leap...they're gonna continue to bop like crazy!

I figure it's about time they started having minds of their own.:catdance1:

    hehehehehehehehe

  • rycrmc; Nothing wrong with followers of those with a kind heart, so your "followers" are in good shape. But it IS nice that some are branching out a bit. It shows you are a blogger who embraces all that there is... :fishing20:

  • I get songs stuck in my head for weeks!  For a while it was "Thomas the Tank Engine" ("He's the really useful engine, you know...") and now it's the Union Label Song! ("Look for, the union label, when you are buying....)  It's making me crazy!  I find myself singing it, humming, whistling it, everywhere!

My co-workers no longer want to sit near me, my kids run the other way....  It's bad.

  • :redcar21: :cry24:

    Riding along in my automobile..................................

hehe.  That is why I have tinted windows, so I wont bug folks like you.

    -Isaac

  • bopping? I was caught on camera at one of our major indoor lacrosse league games. KC and the Sunshine Band's "Get Down Tonight" came over the PA, and the woman sitting next to me and I just started groovin' in our seats! There's no stoppin' me from chair dancing if I feel the beat! Singing in the car? Usually when I am by myself, and never loud. I get complaints from my hubby and daughter all the time, so if I do it, it's without them around.
