Keep off the road
This year was my license renewal year. Of course I forgot, but I ended up going yesterday. I had forgotten that the DMV was hell on earth. I couldn't do the online safe driver thing, because I still had my old address on my license. So I went to the local DMV.
It's not that I mind waiting in a facility that is packed in tighter than sardines, it's just that their waiting system was psychologically damaging. There was no rhyme or reason. They would call A345, then X123, then D56. You had no idea when or if you would be called. You couldn't leave to go to the bathroom because your number could be called any second or hour, there was no way of knowing.
And you really couldn't commiserate with the person next to you. If you turned to talk and they turned to answer, you were practically making out. Which would have been fine if the person next to me was cute, but I got stuck with a fat, mustache lady. Wasn't interested in making out with her that's for sure.
The only option was to stare at the giant picture of Jesse White, our Secretary of State. I don't know what Jesse does exactly, but he should definitely change the number system.
There was a lady there who I later learned was 95. Granted she looked good for 95, but she was 95 and this is a drivers license facility. Those two things don't go, EVER. Since I had nothing to do while I was waiting, I watched her take the eye test.
I am not exaggerating people, this took her twenty min. She didn't understand peripheral, and the blinking lights. She would read only part of line five, which I later learned during my own eye test, was because half of line five is so blurry, it's practically unreadable.
As the woman was struggling with her eye test, the clerk wasn't paying much attention, it looked like she was in the process of approving the license even before the eye test was done.
When it was my turn, I too had to take the eye test. As I said, the end of line five was blurry, very blurry. I had to strain to see the letters and guess. I guess this doesn't matter to Jesse or the DMV, because she pushed me right through.
Later they screwed up my address, so I ended up at the picture part with the 95 year old.
I smile and ask, " Did you have to take a road test?" This is where I learned she was 95, she drove a lot, and she has to take a yearly road test until she dies. She has been taking one since she was 85.This should have comforted me, but I witnessed her eye test and my own, and I have a feeling it's a hassle to NOT renew someones license, so they just push people through.
So we both got our licenses. I still don't see well, I guess I have to take the initative and get my eyes checked by a real person.
As far as the sweet 95 year old? Watch out.

Stay off the road.

The wait in the DMV is incredible. When I lived in Indiana you just walked in and they took care of you. But now that I am back in Illinois, I am back to the wait.
Our small town used to be horrible slow elderly ladies who ran the office! And one was a hairlip (hard to understand) and used one finger to type on the computer! now, it's wierd, but it is sharing an office now with a floral shop and run by younger women who make flower arrangements on the side.......but at least they are efficient!
I went in one time to update mine and had messed up and only put in one contact that morning.......they tested one eye and made me promise to go home and put in the other one! I appreciated it since I normally wear both but chuckled when I walked out the door and have been a little more careful since then. They'll pass anyone on the eye test!! Have a great 4th! :wine25:
I can't believe she is still on the road--don't know whether to say 'watch out', or 'go for it, granny'!! good you got it taken care of, mine comes up before too long-wonder what that experience will be like. At least here, they have sequential numbers! Glad you stopped by-be safe!
You want to hear something scary...here in CO if you take your drivers test and you miss too many you can just go sit down and study a bit more and take it again...and this is the same dang thing they do for truck drivers!!! When I got my license back in Feb I watched a guy testing for his commercial license take the test 4 times!!! and he is out there behind the wheel somewhere! SCARY!!!!
Oh...Happy 4th of July too!!!!
What are your feelings about "regular" people who set off fireworks? I just posted my thoughts... I'm curious what yours are.
yeah, it's scary -- i see senior citizens in the store who can barely walk & function & then they get into a car & drive off ... i saw one old lady just back out of a parking space without looking ... & another one driving incredibly slowly, gripping the steering wheel as if she could barely control the car... then again -- there are horrible drivers of all ages...
The only thing scarier than a 95 year old driver is a 16 year old driver.
I can think of 3 times in the past couple years when an elderly driver, somewhere in the country, has crashed into a DMV. I just hope when I'm that old, everyone will have Star Trek Transporters.
Clearly. My brother and his wife were in an accident involving an 89 year old woman. My brother was driving down the highway and this woman waited and waited and waited to merge onto the highway. My brother thought she was going to wait until they passed but at the last minute the woman pulled out in front of them. My brother's car was totaled and the woman's? nada
My brother now requires surgery on his knee and neither of them have been able to go back to work in weeks. Clearly, people about a certain age should not be allowed to drive.
Yep... those DMV places are a trip in all states I hear! That really is a wierd numbering system! :question29: Is that to avoid a "mugging" of your number or what??? :hmmm22: Happy Belated Birthday! You do share a birthday with my very talented niece that is an artist!!! That video that one of your subs sent you was very cool! I'm sure that made you feel special! Happy 4th to you too... I've been enjoying the time off and trying to catch up on Xanga! :greensmileys38::browndog33::bye2:
I think you're right about those eye tests. Some people want to have a license even though they have no intention of driving. My grandmother kept renewing her license even though she had glaucoma in both eyes and hadn't driven since she had her "Henry Ford" (Model T). My brother-in-law has had a license since age 16 even though he's never driven, and is now over 60 and legally blind.
I had to get my license renewed yesterday too. Even with my glasses, line 5 was hard to read. I wonder why all states have you read line 5.
At my last job, my secretary had a 99 year old father who still drove. He had a rear-ending bumping accident, at which he was cited for following too close, so he had to go to court to fight to keep his license. After the hearing, and the road test they made him take, they passed him. As he walked out of the DMV, his renewed license in hand, he handed his daughter the keys and said "I just wanted to prove I could do it. I'm not driving anymore. That accident was totally my fault. I never saw the guy until I couldn't stop."
Taking my 16 year old to get his permit this week. :blur6:
Oh the dread of sitting in the passenger seat -- I still have my grip embedded in the passenger door from driving with my daughter! :hmmm22:
Dear Laura,
I hope the little old lady stays away from farmer's markets.

I wonder if old people in our state have to take extra measures to keep their licenses in oklahoma??? I would like to find out. I think they should. I think thats great, although it would be better if your blog mentioned how hard and detailed her tests were..... yeah...so might as well not test her extra... my grandma drove until she scared HERSELF and made HERSELF stop driving... she couldn't see over the friggin dash... she sat on a pot with a pillow onit... I swear... true story....
They had the same set up in Milwaukee. I think it's so the security guys can watch on their little cameras and make comments on how we look like a cage of trapped insects. Can't be any logical reason anyways. Another reason I'm so glad I moved to a small town. At the MTO, you just stand in line...
:question29:Is this for real? You mean to tell me that you get tested for your license every couple of years? Wow! They only take our picture here in PA every four years....that's it-no tests. But the long lines & handicapped workers that never have a sense of humor----universal.
Yikes.
95 and still driving....WOW..... When I'm 95 I expect to have a handsome young man driving me where ever I want to go!! That is IF I feel like leaving my recliner and wide screen TV.....
Holy Frijoles!
happy late bday girl!:hot21:
I don't know whether I'm horrified or terribly amused ... oh man!
Illinois' DMV sounds much like Texas DPS (Department of public safety) OMG! It is a scary place, rude employees, and crowded. I actually had to go with, my then 17 year old son, to replace his lost license...he was frightened with what he saw. The DPS is not for the weak of heart that's fo sho.
I'm not sure about the age...if there's a limit....but I think as long as you can see....you're good to go...scary right?
I hate the DMV. It will do nothing but get worse as a national identification card is implemented across the nation (and legislation to do this has already passed).
Oye...the dreaded DMV...
Have a happy Friday!
I hated waiting at the DMV when I lived in a big city. Now that I'm back in a rural area, the headache isn't so bad, lol...
New subscriber by the way!
the 95 thing makes me nervous!
