Nutritional facts
Now that I am officially a diabetic, I have to watch my carbs/sugar. I have not seen the " diabetic educator" yet, because I have not had time. Besides I am a self educator. Note to mom who is now upset that I have not seen the diabetic educator, I made an appointment today. Anyway, this has reduced me to reading labels, specifically the how many calories etc... labels. This makes grocery shopping take much longer than it should be, but I figure it will be second nature soon.
I was excited when I was in the bread aisle and I saw bread with a big sticker on the front that said, " five net carbs and 35 calories a slice." Sure it tastes like cardboard but that's the price one pays when they have a disease.
I wondered though, how do I really trust that this is the case? How do I know there are really only five net carbs? I mean it's probably against the law to lie on those nutritional things, but is someone actually checking?
Back when I was in my fat free phase, my girlfriend and I used to go to this Dairy Dream ( or something) that is now closed down. We got this stuff, the name escapes me now, that tasted EXACTLY like chocolate ice cream. The sign basically said this stuff was fat free about 2 calories. It was pretty much like one step above water. At the time we thought it was a miracle food. We went almost every night to get some. Now I'm thinking there is no way. It was just too good, and I have had enough diet food since to know, nothing is THAT good without paying some price.
I'm hoping the new things I buy are really what they say they are. I have not done the blood sugar testing thing yet because I am waiting for the free samples at the doctors office.
Here are some things I have learned since being on this diet.
1) Soy and flaxseed tortillas taste like sh#t unless you drown them in salsa.
2) Celery is not as good as pizza, and it's about the only thing you can binge eat, without gaining weight.
3) People stare at you when your overweight and checking labels. Then they give you a knowing smile, as if to say " another diet? good luck with that" in a sarcastic tone.
4) water is just not as good as sugar drinks.
5) Walnuts are not as good as a bag of barbecue potato chips.
6 ) If you don't look at the fast food restaurants when you pass by, you can still smell them.
7) when you can't have something, you really want it, even if you din't like it before.
8) If something is low cal, low fat, and low carb/sugar, high fiber, it will taste like dirt or it is a vegatable.
I hope when I'm skinny and hot, I don't lose all my fat friends. Sorry fellow fatties, I have to lose weight. Just remember when your eating that giant piece of cake, I am suffering with my carrots and celery and my "special" bread.
And I will be jealous of you.

aww, I truly feel your pain. I'm on a "diet" too, and have to count calories and fat grams. I've managed to lose almost 10 pounds--so it can be done. But, it sucks in the process!
The one bit of encouragement I can give you is this: once it's been a while since you've had the pop and cookies and chips in your house, and you have found good substitutes (grapes? popcorn?), you won't miss the old stuff so much.
I promise not to hate you! I got thin once...lost 85 lbs. in 7 months...then found out I was pregnant...AGAIN! Guess who gained it all back during pregnancy? I'll do it again someday...right now I am concentrating on Feb.1st as my quit date for ciggarettes! Got the chantix prescription!
RYC: I don't know if it gives you the runs...bought some for my girlfriend who is diabetic for Christmas and she loved it...she bought more herself, but she never said anything about the runs!
Anyhow...SwissColony.com has lots of sugar free stuff.
I have been eating the lowfat, NO cholesterol stuff for awhile now, my DH has bad cholesterol and off the charts triglycerides. Not everything lowfat/low carb is that bad. Kraft has some WONDERFUL fat free cheese slices out there. Well, they're wonderful if you like their regular ones that is.
Milton's makes the best "good for you bread" out there! No trans fat no cholesterol, whole grain! It is so good my KIDS eat it! It's so good I'd choose it over all the other breads good for you or not!
Several companies make fat free mayo now, and a lot of the lunch meat companies are making low fat versions of things. I've found pepperoni, salami, and several types of ham for the DH. The pepperoni was a huge hit because I can make him homemade pizza with much less fat!
Hang in there honey...you'll find your stride. And give those jerks that look at you funny a big fat finger to gawk at instead! LOL
You are just too cool, quitting smoking and losing weight! And I have no doubt you will accomplish this second goal, just as you did the first.
I've not had diabetes, but I battle the pounds daily. Hubby has it, and I wish he were as dedicated to losing the weight as you are. He has to be MADE to be dedicated, lol. And I am the food police, which I hate!
Can you have Yoplait Light yogurt? It's fat-free and has a sugar substitute. It's really tasty - and about 90-100 calories.
Thanks for your nice comment - I appreciate it.
Kathi
i dont understand why anyone does it
"If you don't look at the fast food restaurants when you pass by, you can still smell them"
So true! LMAO!
They have this pretty good NO calorie chocolate sauce in the super market. My mom used to get it and drizzled it on ice cream all the time. The other "no calorie" products are awful though...
my dad has diabetes and i am actually president of a women's club that raises money to fight diabetes. when my dad first lived with us (before he went to a nursing home--long story on that one), i had a nurtitionist with the VNA come out to teach me about carb counting and how many carbs you actually need in a meal. it was a lot different than i thought it was. good luck with it all! also you may want to see if ther is a diabetes education center in you center. they often hold classes for those who are newly diagnosed.
@pogueatl -
You mean diet? Me either. But I have too.
@sorrowfulheart -
Well I am supposed to see this diet lady and nurse practitioner who specialize in diabetes so we'll see how that goes, just curious are you getting this response? Because I did the reply thing, just to see? It's a new feature.
@ok123LetsGO - Yeah, maybe I should plug my nose
@momofjenmatt -
@momofjenmatt - it came up on my email...how crazy is that!
@momofjenmatt - Kills themself
@sorrowfulheart - VERY CRAZY Thanks for checking
HA HA HA HA HA!!!!! I've SO gotten that look in grocery stores...
It's worth it, though... I was overweight, lost all my weight, looked great, got married, started birth control, gained a ton (but not all, thankfully) back... Eventually found out (once I switched doctors) that the birth control messed up my thyroid, so now that's being treated and I'm working my way back down, step by slow, celery-filled step... I feel your pain...
@TheWoobDog -
The pill? Such a blessing and a curse!
ihope you will feel more encouraged when u see the nutritionist
My dad got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a week agowe were not surprisedwell only that he managed to dodge the bullet this long !!sighi think we willbe selling my mom soon...if she does stop trying to practice medicine in the kitchen!the dr made a crack about "you will be enjoying alot of broccoli" and my mom thinks he has to eat it at every meal and HE HATE BROCCOLI can you see this is gonna be fun.??*rolls eyes* one of there bonds... the main one was in pursuit of FOOD planning the next meal as they eat the present one... i have postcards from all over the world about the food they ate.swear to god!my hope for Him is that the dietician will bring sanity to the plani think the idea needs to be ..for himit is a plan for livinghe was having really bad depression and no interest in life...( ps he is also treating cancer) i think he thought the cancer had spread...now knowing it has not he is better... and ready to deal.now if i could just find someplace for DR JOANyou will be fine...just look at it as ..'just for ... now... or if you can just for today "i am rooting for ya
I think I'd die if I became diabetic. More power to you for being so brave & cutting down those bad foods. You inspire me.. & crack me up.
When I was vegetarian I tried tofu. That made me carnivorous(sp?) again.. it reminded me of friend eggs when it was fried & I just don't like eggs- the look, the taste, the smell.. blech.
Keep at it!
FRIED* eggs. Because eggs aren't my friend.
Too bad there is no more bitter melon in season, I still swear by that vegetable but boy is it bitter but good for diabetics.
Resturants are sneaky they will sneak sugar into foods that you order. Eventually your body will tell you if you are eating something that is sweetened secretly.
Repeated warnings like your feet may become amputated and losing your eyesight is warning enough to respect your diet and stay on the diabetic course.
Any thing that tasted good and said it was fat free and only 5 calories or something.. it was either a lie or there was something else in it that made it terrible for you. LOL.
I don't know if its a good diabetic diet, but this one that Roxie is on and I tried for a couple weeks is really good. I was losing weight and still am not sure why I stopped... I wasn't hungry and didn't crave anything... I"m just a terrible backslider with Dr Pepper... but itwas the LA Weight Loss plan... and I have the little papers that tell you what to have every day.. I could send you a sample if you want... I really really wasnt hungry, you actually HAVE to eat 6 times a day. It rocks.
Aww, Laura
It's no fun...but the diabetic diet is actually one they say *everyone* should follow because it is so healthy* Not that 'that' helps you 'feel' anybetter
but,..you are too funny...* love your list* here is a site page to check..and it leads to others...maybe you'll find something better...I hope so...Good for you, following the diet, you quit smoking..pat on the back Laura *** hugs, take care of 'you'...Love, Lee

Well Laura I think I'll just do the diabetic diet with you... but I can only lose a few lbs because with my new job (in Wisconsin no less) I get 40% off at Lane Bryant... So I need to be a 14; can we still be friends?
i'm struggling to lose weight, too. damned hormones "helped" me to gain 30 lbs. not nearly as rotten as yours, that is gor sure, BUT, i can commensurate with you. and just think, when you are not dieting anymore you can do something fun to reward yourself. i don't know what, but something....hehe
RYC: I found out about the reply thing from Dan's site. He had a game of word association going so we could see how it worked. I sometimes come back to a site to see what other people commented...but not always...so I can see how some of the replies might not be seen.
I've been checking out low-glycemic diets online...that's what nutrisystem says it is and there is no way I'm paying boocou bucks for it. I've seen the Fifty-50 products in the store...and they give you plenty of ideas for what to eat instead-ofs.
I might be in the same boat as you, diabetically speaking. However, I'm still in the denial stage. Stay tuned.
@little_pockit -
Yeah something...
@PPhilip -
Well yeah, I kind of like my feet.
@Jaz -
I actually like Brocolli so we'll see
@DiscordInTheGarden -
Yeah Tofu, not gona happen
@bubblysox -
Let me go to the diabetic specialist first and see what she says. Thanks though.
@priorities -
Thanks for the link. But great I have to watch my FAT TOO? God must hate me lol
@twoberry -
Uh oh. Get tested, please.
@screaminginmyhead -
can I get free stuff before I'm skinny? Where in Wisconsin? We could maybe meet sometime.
@PrincessFiveandDime -
But if I reply to you ( like I'm doing now,) you get it right?
I have TONS of testing strips if we have the same monitor, I could send them to you. Once the pregnancy ended, so did my diabetic episode, for now. I'm with you on the angst.
It's not gonna suck to be thin and flirty (and diabetes free!) in a few months! You can do this.
sounds like you're not gonna let it get you down ... good luck ... most of us know how hard dieting is, but in your case cheating could have dire consequences ... you can educate us all on how to eat healthier... take care...
I'll still be your friend. I'm totally feeling your pain, I've seemed to developed a sort of IBS during my pregnancy that I hope will go away. I can't have dairy anymore, and I'm from Wisconsin. That's like trying to remove a limb. At least my special milk tastes better than special bread.
I just read an article about a plant sweetener called Stevia which is suppose to be good for people with sugar problems.
Yeah your right about Obama. . . he's a real funny guy. Why he's more laughs than a barrel of monkeys. If you want him to be president than I hope you get your wish Laura. I quit voting after 2000 so I shouldn't talk about it and from this time forth tick a lock.
I am so with you. It took us 2 hours to grocery shop Monday and I'm supposed to already know this crap. I read every single label. Paid 4.39 freaking dollars for some diabetic cereal only to discover that generic cheerios are just as good. I just picked up his first set of prescriptions 139.00 and that was with freaking insurance. Test strips must be made out of gold.
Ok
this one might make you smile...* http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/diabetes-recipes/RE00091
My mom always told me, "it hurts to be beautiful." She said that while she was pulling my hair back into a braid so tight the skin on my temples hurt, but perhaps there is truth in that after all.
I totally feel your pain. I have been pre-diabetic for many years, and I'm sure I've finally crossed over to the dark side. I have to have another blood test, but I didn't make an appointment. I really don't want to know and I really don't want to be considered diabetic, but as my doctor told me ... "it's just a matter of time"
It really sucks to be diabetic and it sucks even worse having to eat crap food. I was good for a while not eating sweets and too many carbs, but it didn't really make a difference in my bloodsugar. I figure I'm destined.
There are gazillions of people who are diagnosed with diabetes every day. It seems to be very common and almost an epidemic. BUT, I think they lowered the number at which they consider you to be diabetic. At first they told me under 130, then 120 and now they want it under 100, which is impossible for me. They keep lowering the numbers ... like for b/p and cholesterol. Soon it will be ZERO!
Good luck with your healthy diet! Quitting smoking was a huge benefit too! Maybe you can reverse the diabetes with healthy eating and not smoking!!
@ItalianGrotto -
Thanks, I'll let you know. I don't have the testy thing yet
@lalunebleue -
Ha Ha, I don't think I'll be educating anyone. But thanks for the faith in me
@perseykhad -
No Cheese uh oh
@blackheartedforce -
Okay, you seem upset, sorry.
@LonaMay -
Uh Oh I don't have those yet the strips and stuff, I hope my insurance is better than yours. I bought diabetic expensive peanut butter. Expunge compared it to our natural cheaper peanut butter, guess which one was better?
@priorities thanks : smile:
@evagarringer -
wow, your mom was harsh. But yeah maybe
5) Walnuts are not as good as a bag of barbecue potato chips.
pour about a tablespoon af GOOD olive oil in a pan, heat it up, toss in about about a cupful of walnuts, sprinkle with cinnamon and 4 or 5 packets of splenda. stir until well coated & walnuts are warm, don't cook to high or they will burn. trust me it is a fantastic snack.
@DaBombMom2 -
I know what you mean about the numbers. I was 350, so I'm kind of excited to see what I am now ( or when I get tested) after all this eating shit, I better be at at least 200
@illgrindmyownthankyou -
Yum, thanks
Watch out for that sugar free stuff. Since I'm diabetic I'd bought some sugar free candy. One afternoon I came home and it was all eaten. I asked the kids and all of them denied eating it. I was able to determine that my daughter ate it because she spend all night loudly farting.
@ronlawhouston -
ha ha ha.
@momofjenmatt -
Got it.
I've been turning into a health food nut myself. I have to say, it is getting easier to find healthier things that don't taste like cardboard. Have you tried "Go Lean Crunch " cereal by kashi? Its one of my favorites. I try lots of things, but only like a small percentage. Good luck in your quest to get healthy.
@nicumom -
Not sure what kind of cereal I can have yet. I know kashi is high fiber, but so is fruit and I can't have that yet, so we'll see. I have to see the stupid diabetes lady and then we'll see what I can have.
I find lots of hot sauce helps disguise the taste of dirt.
@Bad_Dogma humm maybe I'll try that
I have cholesterol.. and that didn't motivate me enough to start eating healthy..
I hate celery and baby carrots don't taste like much without blue cheese..
@Crazii_LOkiTa -strangely is I don't think cholesteral would change me either. But diabetes and loss of feet and blindess sort of freaks me out
@momofjenmatt - True.. lol.. I just need some motivation to loose weight though.. hopefully I find it..
There are no net carbs - you count them all!! And when you check your sugar - the carbs will come out and scream at you!! Visit the diabetes educator - they are helpful. I know.
