  • Works sucked

    so bad today.  Paul, the teacher, is at some school board ( for his local school), retreat or something.
    He made it clear that he only goes to these things to get a vacation away from his wife.  Apparently, this year, the Fonz is going to be there.  I guess he writes children's books ( what celebrity doesn't?)  And even though I am past my Happy Days, Fonzie crush, I told him to get his autograph  for me.

    Him:  The Fonz is going to be there!

    Me: No WAY?

    Him: WAY.

    Me:  Why?

    Him:  He writes children's books

    Me:  Who doesn't?  Well get me his autograph anyway.

    Him:  Your Kidding?

    Me : No, I want it.  I hear he's really short.  let me know.  I'm short too, and he's a nice Jewish boy, yeah, I really want his autograph.

    Anyway, when the teacher is out, I sub.  Then someone is supposed to come sub for me.  Of course today we were short staffed for a change, so the other Ta's had to rotate and come in for an hour each. They tried, but wern't helpful.

    The boys, can not handle change.  So they immediately start testing, swearing etc...

    We have one kid, lets call him Carlos ( because that's his name), who is normally kind of quiet.  Yesterday he quietly, but very matter of fact, told us about his prior school.  It has been in the news because a student stabbed a teacher for no apparent reason.  He was telling us that although they check the back packs, they have no metal detectors.  He said kids bring in guns all the time.  He also sells drugs at school, and says he makes the most money there, as opposed to the streets.  He told us the teachers have given up, and don't teach and they will pass you if your quiet and stay out of trouble.

    Today he was goofing around all day.  I told him to stop.  He didn't.  I told him he was getting on my nerves, he responded by saying " so take my F#$cking points"  " like I give a sh#t."  I hate when they do that.  That's when I start getting immature.  I get sucked right in.  That's when I'll say something like "  Good, I'm glad you don't care, now you lose more for swearing."  This will go back and forth, until I have realized nothing I say is getting to him.  I want to hit him then.  I can't, it's against the law, and I would probably be killed.  But I really want to.  At home, with my own kids, I can go all crazy, psycho, on them.  That's why they would be to scared to talk to me like that.  But at work, I have to be professional, which can be really frustrating.  Tomorrow will be worse.  The teacher will still be gone and I " taxed Carlo's ass"as the boys would say.  They are on a behavioral point system.  But he won't come in and apologize, he will make me pay.

    When it comes to power struggles they always win.

    Oh well, subbing earns me three dollars more an hour, so I just have to take some Xanax and be the adult.

    Wish me luck.

  • I guess I'm glad I have the job I have and not yours. Most of the people I work with are pains in the a$$...but I know some day they'll retire. Right now there's a supervisor in training who acts like a prison guard. Her name is Sunny and that is so opposite of her personality...maybe it's really Sonny...because that does fit her!

  • good luck,  I don't think I could handle them guys,  you should tell them that when you are really stressed it makes you puke,  projectile vomit,  and maybe if you throw up on his shoes,  you can prove a point.

    I think that is considered behavioral therapy?  :P

  • @PrincessFiveandDime -

    I think Sonny is a guys name.  Honestly, i don't mind my job that much.  Or I would quit.  Today did suck though.

  • @browneyedpsycho -

    I think they would hurt me if I did that.

  • I would have resigned. I dont think I could have handled that.

  • this is why I teach third grade, lol.

  • Luck?!? I'm wishing you a refill on the Xanax!

  • when i was a kid, my mom worked at paramount studios and the fonz was ont he happy days softball team.  i was about 5 years old and he was mad i called him fonz because he was with someone he was trying to impress.  apparently i told him i didnt like him anymore.

    lol.  but i do!!

    his books are suppose to be great for elementary school kids.

  • @awish4you -

    well everyone has their talents, I guess this is mine

  • @baychic -

    well this isn't real school anyway, it's a residential treatment center, so age doesn't have a lot to do with it.

  • @sorrowfulheart -

    He sounds like a jerk.  Really, his books are good?  That surprises me.

  • Just take all the points off, give him the letter, and say 'you might want to read this before you give it to your parents'. He'll read it, freak, try to threaten you. Just way 'consequenses for your behavior' and he'll balk and behave. Trust me, this works all the time.

    Fear has to be manipulated, not contested.

    'nuff said...

  • @Don_Cauchi -

    Well like I said ( to another commenter) I work in a residential treatment center.  They don't get notes to parents.  Half of them don't even have parents they are wards of the state, the other half the parent does not care.  They ( the boys ) are criminal gang bangers, they would laugh even if they had parents who cared.

  • Ohh.. good luck. What fun you have. I've been subbing too, but for K-5th grade and trust me, it's much better! Even the Kindergarteners are much better!

  • and that is the reason that i could never ever be a teacher!  props to you!  with xanax...they might as well not even have me there...haha...makes me worthless.  i could care less what was going on around me.  guess thats why i havent gone to get any and just took one of my hubbys!

    "At home, with my own kids, I can go all crazy, psycho, on them.  That's why they would be to scared to talk to me like that.  "
    and that is part of the reason i do not really like to be around my friends kids, they dont make theirs listen and for some things i would beat my kids ass for they just let it go.  i watched my cousins kids wing a phone at another friends head...and it smacked his head hard and good.  and nothing.  hardly a smack to the kids leg.  WTF!?  my kids wouldnt be able to walk.

  • @azcason -

    Trust me I know.  I used to sub " normal" kids

    @brandi_shawn -

    Oh that bugs me too and is another blog in itself.  I can't stand when parents don't disipline their kids

  • good thing there's no sugar in xanax.  Good luck - i'm sorry your job sucks -- so bad.  i would probably cry if I had to do your job, and then i'd be done.

  • sounds like you should be earning more than 3 extra $$ per hour for that!

  • @lizbeth62 -

    Liz, you cry at all jobs.  ha ha.  Just giving you sisterly love.

    @lalunebleue -

    Your not kidding

  • I just had to stop by. I've seen your name around on other sites. I really like your style of writing, so entertaining!

    I despise the fact that so many authority figures feel like their hands are tied...bleh!

    that's pretty cool about the Fonz, though!

    Take care,

    Kimbers

  • @momofjenmatt -

    I got a notice of your message back...so this reply thing is working out.

  • oh dear.  I'm so sorry you have to be under this stress. I doubt I'd be able to control my temper if I had your job.

  • I'd find your job too stressful.  Do they ever return home or is your place where they go before they go to jail?  I'm asking because it's hard to have a points system with kids especially when you know that they are going back home to where it will not likely be kept up.  My son had a points system from the hospital program he was in for a couple of months, but it is too hard to sustain it perfectly.  It's exhausting.  It's different for people who get paid to just take care of those kids all day than it is for a parent.  I guess my point is that even WITH the skills, I was not able to maintain a points system with Adam so what of the parents who do not have the parenting skills?

  • I suppose if they are just going back to the street it doesn't matter either way.  It is a lot harder to control them out there than it is when they are in a facility.

  • @msbutterfli -

    Thank you.  Ha Ha.  I have a feeling the Fonz isn't that cool, but we'll see if his books are impressive.  He'll be back at work Friday so we'll see.

  • @PrincessFiveandDime -

    Yeah I really like it now

    @nicumom -  You would be fine, you get used to it

    @soul_survivor -   I know it's stupid to get all worked out, most go right back and do the same thing anyway, what do I care.  I just get a short fuse when the teachers not there to kind of be a buffer.  He's really mellow so it helps me stay cool.

  • Once I was being bothered by a kid in public. I figured if I grabbed his shoe and threatened to throw it on the roof, maybe he might behave or go home shoeless.

    Another time a kid brought his gangster family back to harass me. But in a public place you have more leeway than in a back alley.

    In a way if a argument escalates you need to take it to a more less public area and just eliminate the showboating element in front of their peers. You stated that you are subbing. In a way it is harder because they think you are just temporary and will go away. The only resource you may have is to look up their record and know as much about them as possible. The other resource is knowing most of their peers and having a session with them to learn as much about them as possible to use for your advantage.

    I may not have met the Fonz but I have met Robert Blake when he was making a movie with Dyan Cannon. He was a take charge kind of guy and I'm pretty sure he masterminded the murder of the woman who he got pregnant....

  • Good luck.
    Haha, Fonz.

  • do u  give them a chance to re earn the points?

  • oh man  i  got  so  caught up in part two ..

    i forgot to  comment on part one....the  FONZ :)  i  met him :)  and john ritter... and i have a pic  with them...i was  in my bliss:) i got kissed as well  woooooo faints.... gigglei think i  posted the pic on xanga ...if i can fig out when i will tell u the  date..if u want to have a look see  LOL

  • GOOD LUCK at work.. sounds like u will be having those moments where u see in movies of you actually doing what u want to get those kids in check then waking up to reality and realizing u really can't do it lol

  • @PPhilip -

    Isn't robert blake in prison?

    @Jaz -

    Yes

    @Jaz -

    I'll have to check that out

    @swtcharmedlilnina -

    ha ha.  yeah pretty much.

  • You've got more patience than me lady, a cattle prod in the behind sounds like it wouldn't go amiss with those students. Gotta respect the fact you kept your cool.

  • The Fonz would make those kids behave.  You might have to resort to a cattle prod.
