  • Dear past self

    For Featured Grown ups

    Dear Laura,
    Well your 17 now, you really need to get your act together.  And you will, but boy, you are going to have some hard life lessons along the way.  I would tell you to just skip to the part where the lessons have already been learned, but it doesn't work that way.  That's the bad news.  The good news is, your going to live until 47 for sure.  Your still going to have a sense of humor, in case you were worried.
    You know how you think your fat?  HA HA HA HA.  Honey, you really need to appreciate your hotness.  Oh hot?  That's a future word for being a fox.  Anyway, apparently there is this thing called metabolism, and yours is going to pretty much screw you over, so appreciate your gorgeous figure.  Appreciate the music too.  There is going to be this thing called rap and really it's like talking, it's weird, you'll hate it.  You know how you love watching TV?  Like Happy Days and Joanie loves Chachie?  That only gets better, with a gazillion choices.  In fact, your going to be amazed and enjoy all the new inventions that come up. No flying cars though, at least not in the next 30 years.  Hey, you know how you have gotten in a bunch of car accidents due to the weather?  Expect more of the same.  You/I invented a road snow melter, but you/I are still you,  so we never took it anywhere, except in our own head.  Actually, we had a lot of great ideas, but you know how we are.
    In general, your future is looking pretty good.  Like I said, you kind of take the hard road, but the outcome is going to surprise you.  I'll try not to forget you, because even though your a messed up kid, you have some cool parts I want to hang on to.

    See ya in the future

    47 year old Laura

  • I like my 47 year old self a lot better than my 17 year old self.  I'd have to tell my 17 year old self to stop taking himself so seriously.

  • lol That cracked me up. :o )

  • I love it....I'll have to write one to my 17 year old self....what a trip down memory lane - in good and bad ways!

    Great job, awesome idea.

  • I think you would scare yourself to death if you could communicate thusly.

  • I love reading these letters, it's a great insight to everyone's life.

  • @carpuzzi_kiki -

    Thanks

    @ok123LetsGO -

    aww thank you

    @musicmom60 -

    It wasn't my idea it was for featured grown ups blog ring, but thank you.  You should do it, it's fun.

    @notforprophet -

    I think your right

    @kadywrites -

    me too

  • what I want to know is how I went from 17 to 47 in less then 10 years?  and why does saying I'm 47 bug me so much?  you have a way better outlook on this than I do!

  • ha ha ha ha ha this is a cool idea.

    makes me wish i was older... maybe I could write one anyway?

  • @illgrindmyownthankyou -

    ha ha, hey, what can you do?

    @jessp505again -

    sure you can.  Go back more years though, like write your 10 year old self or 13.  I'm sure a lot has happened since then

  • "admire your hotness"  if we only knew then what we know now!

    great post

  • I did a similar challenge on Kween's site a while back, and as I recall, I included the winning lottery numbers for a previous lottery, too... ha, ha.  That was fun to read, and too bad you didn't get the road snow melter going, but it sounds like you are quite blessed and living a great life.

  • @momsaway58 -

    Thanks, can't complain

  • I, too like my 55 yr old self a lot better, boy was I naive at 17, but thought I knew it all-lol!

  • I saw your journal on the xanga homepage and had to subscribe after reading a bit.  My journal is nowhere near as entertaining, but I hope you don't mind if I read yours.

  • @emeralds -

    of course not.  Thank you.  off to the dentist, but wanted to say thanks

  • Hey good letter! And I'm sure you're still a fox, fun word to say...fox, um anyway, this maybe one of those letters that gets more fun to write with more time passing. For me, I'm just 22, five years ago, not far enough to look back and really think abt it. I do sometimes, but its still close enough to wonder what would have happened if I made different choices. Hope I can one day look back and say "Damn, that was fun!" to both the good and the bad.

  • Good thing you didn't say any soap opera spoilers for 17 year old laura...

    You could have told her that the oil shortage would be temporary...

    For sure don't tell her she's going to have two lovely children...

  • @MagnetoX_Onslaught -

    yep

    @PPhilip -

    No the children part will have to be a surprise.

  • I don't think metabolism was even in the dictionary back then. Nor was size zero. That's a new invention none of us saw coming!

  • @PrincessFiveandDime -

    Your damn straight.  I think that's why I'm fat!!!!!

  • wow...that could have been a letter to my 17 year old self. Especially the fat part. LOL!

  • @prettynosyarentu -

    I think a lot of us can relate to the fat part ha ha

  • written with a good sense of humor. It's interesting how you can learn so much about a person talking to their past self.

  • @silkenbutterfly -

    yeah, you learn about ones self too.  I really liked this topic.  Thansk for the comment.

  • Laura I love the conversation going on here!  I really enjoyed your letter - I always have and always will enjoy your place.

  • @screaminginmyhead -

    thank, I don't deserve it though, I really have sucked as a xanga friend.  I feel bad about it.  BTW did you know your picture in your last entry does not show up?

  • @momofjenmatt - No - darn, thanks...the picture is important ::off to fix it::

  • "You know how you think your fat?  HA HA HA HA. Yeah.

  • Interesting.  Wonder how the 17 year old Laura would respond back to the 47 year old one.  That would be an interesting follow up topic.  Good post.

  • @tvtfln -

    ha ha.  That would be a good follow up, except 17 year old Laura would probably ay something short and sweet like " your so queer"

  • So  I guess next you'll send a letter (or maybe an email) to the the sixty-seven year old Laura?

    I've been going through your archives again.  I'm gonna use the one about all those smelly boys on your job (if it's okay with you.)  I plan on the title of "Smelly Sex."

  • Great letter... now.. referring to the comment you left me... I came over to get in on the bitchfest, but I have no idea where the rude comment was made.... actually... I have a good idea, but theres 220 comments on that entry right now... a little direction??

  • What an amazingly refreshing post!

  • @dsullivan -

    ha ha, sure except i don't remember that one.  so send me the lind when it's up

    @bubblysox -

    Oh gosh, now I have to find it sigh, I will after work today

  • Don't we only wish we could. -

  • Here's the link to "Smelly Sex."

    I made a couple of very small changes so as to direct it to a general audience rather than a xanga audience.

    Your pieces that I've been posting on my site have been getting good hits.  To check out some of your others, go to Sullivan's Short Stories, then go to The Story Page, then scroll down to Humor

  • For some reason, the links I posted in my last entry didn't take (probably forgot to dot an i) So here they are again. Smelly Sex

    and Sullivan's Short Stories

    If these links don't take, I'll send you the URLs

  • On your previous post - I am not sure what this means, but my 18 month old daughter made me play "Middle Aged Woman" over and over and over again...  Any deep thoughts??

  • @evagarringer -

    uh oh how's that for deep.  It does have a good tune though ha ha

  • @dsullivan -

    Thanks that worked.  It still sounds like a blog to me, but most people that read those stories know these come from Xanga right?

  • You didn't even mention the great kids she was going to have.

  • I just watched the middle aged woman thing.....I guess that would be me....groan

  • @Sonworshiper -

    It' all of us middle agers.  Actually, I think it's great 45 - 50 etc.. is considered middle aged now.

  • @sincerely_jennie -

    I wanted that to be a surprise!!!!!!  If your read the comments I told someone else that too.  You can't tell your whole future.  You have to be general about it geez.

  • wonder what your 17 year old self would say in response to that letter... dear older me... i don't listen to my mom so i'm not sure i can listen to you either...  47 is so old- but the music in the future sounds kind of cool. so does the tv. do i drive a cool red sportscar? am i rich? i think you left out the important details! but thanks for the advice, seriously. i'll make sure to remember it when i hit those rough patches... love, your younger, sexier self! :)

  • @jerjonji -

    ha ha, I probably wouldn't have been that nice.

  • @momofjenmatt - well... i didn't want to be too rude on your own site! =)

  • An excellent letter. from another one who took the hard road!

  • @jerjonji -

    Your funny

    @azcason -

    Thanks, yeah people who took the easy road = boring.

  • I didn't want to mess with your commentary too much for fear I might rob it of its style.  It's your stuff, not mine.   I never noticed a bloggish feel to your pieces that I've published, but if there is, so what?

    Two of the greats, Erma Bombeck and Dave Barry wrote with a kind of bloggish style.  They wrote of their experiences, peppered with comical exaggerations and witticisms.

    I'm not sure how many readers I have who know about xanga, but I'd guess most of them don't.  Just a guess, mind you.

    The one thing I need to change is that I call your pieces stories, where I should be calling them commentaries--and I can change that much.

    Let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions.  Thanks for letting me "raid" your blog.

  • Don't forget to tell her what stocks to buy.  Or better yet, slip her a winning lottery number...

  • If I could write a letter to me
    and send it back in time to myself at seventeen
    first I'd prove it's me by sayin'
    look under your bed, there's a Skoal can and a Playboy
    no one else would know you hid
    and then I'd say I know it's tough
    when you break up after 7 months
    and yeah I know you really liked her
    and it just don't seem fair
    but all I can say is pain like that is fast and it's rare

    and oh you got so much goin' for you
    goin' right
    but I know at 17
    it's hard to see past Friday night
    she wasn't right for you
    and still you feel like there's
    a knife stickin' out of your back
    and you're wonderin' if you'll survive
    but you'll make it through this and you'll see
    you're still around to write this letter to me

    at the stop sign at Tomlinson and 8th
    always stop completely, don't just tap your brakes
    and when you get a date with Bridgette
    make sure the tank is full
    on second thought forget it, that one turns out kinda cool.
    each and every time you have a fight
    just assume you're wrong and daddy's right.
    and you should really thank Miss Brinkman
    she spent so much extra time
    It's like she sees the diamond underneath
    and she's polishin' you 'til you shine.

    [Letter To Me lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com

    and oh you got so much goin' for you
    goin' right
    but I know at 17
    it's hard to see past Friday night
    tonight's the bonfire rally
    but you're staying home instead
    because if you fail algebra
    mom and dad'll kill you dead
    trust me you'll squeak by and get a C
    and you're still around to write this letter to me

    you got so much up ahead
    you'll make new friends
    you should see your kids and wife
    and I'd end by sayin' have no fear
    these are nowhere near
    the best years of your life

    I guess I'll see you in the mirror
    when you're a grown man
    p.s. go hug aunt Rita every chance you can

    and oh you got so much goin' for you
    goin' right
    but I know at 17
    it's hard to see past Friday night
    I wish you'd study Spanish
    I wish you'd take a typing class
    I wish you wouldn't worry let it be
    I'd say have a little faith and you'll see

    if I could write a letter to me
    to me...

    Thats what this post made me think of =]

  • @Bad_Dogma -

    Now, would that be fair?

    @dsullivan -

    Your very welcome, thanks for wanting to raid it.  If you can get me published/famous like the Erma and Dave, I'll really thank you ha ha.  Thanks for even mentioning their names along with mine.

  • Laughing at PrincessFiveandDime!!!  :D

    Great post chicklet.
    I'm thinking I should do one of these.
    But where to start?  LOL...

  • HAHAHAHA!!! That was soooooooo great!!!
    Joanie loves Chachie....hahahaha! I remember that too!

  • I wish my almost-13-year-old boy could be spared some of the heartache and hardship of the teenage years... but he's just. like. me...  I wonder if I wrote a letter like this... to my teenage self... if he'd be more interested than listening to me tell him yet again not to worry about what "the popular kids" are doing/thinking/breathing...

  • I wish my 17 year old self knew how hot I was too!

  • Oh, to look like I did at 17 again. Damn those kids I popped out! Loved this :)

  • Thanks, yeah, damn kids

  • stupid 17 year olds.

  • @flaminredhead -

    I loved the theme song.  I still remember it.  Something about when I look into your eyes

  • @route66 -

    No, teens never listen to their elders.

  • hahah! that was such a nice letter! i'm 17 now. makes me wonder what the 47 year old me would say to me right now.

  • @DrkMysticWonders -

    hopefully it gives you hope for the future, in case you worried

  • i am a bit. who knows what the future holds. Thank you. you have inspired me and my friends to write a letter to ourselves and seal it up until we're 25.

  • @DrkMysticWonders -

    I did that once with a friend when my kids were little.  it was SOOOO fun and we were right on!

  • This is a great letter.

  • I was much wiser at 17 than I am now.  I think so anyway.  Loved this entry.

  • lol ... Love it!

  • I'm following your directive, like I always do Laura (or at least TRY to! :) ), from your "mass message". I'm assuming it was linked to this blog so I'll comment on this.

    As I have been "part-time xangan" for about a year now, and since I've never seen pictures of YOU, I'll take your younger version's word for it. urahottie. That's one thing "she" didn't have right. Hot is "HOTTIE", or "HOTT"; NOT "hoT", but that's getting a bit tight. ;)

    Ur doin great, so that makes your "earlier" version  a person with great  long-term vision, although admittedly lacking, in the slightest of ways, when you are talking of "medium-range vision".  We  ain't talkin' looks here,  sweetie!  We's  talkin'  your choice  of .... ahhh... I'm not gettin' into THAT!!

    PEACE

    Scott

  • @mybaddy -

    That old mass message was linked to the NI shootings blog.

    I should have told my 17 year old self that at 47 I was very uncool ( ie: hot vs. Hottie etc...)

  • You know, this just reminded me of something.  Several years ago (read 15 to 17) I contemplated investing in something called a "video store".  Only contemplated  you understand. . .wish I had done it!  Or could have told my younger self to do it!  I think the best invention for t.v. (besides old episodes on dvd) is the DVR (TiVo).  How great is that?  Now, if I could only record 3 stations at the same time while watching a 4th!  I'd really be smiling!  Loved the letter, honestly!~Jeri

  • @Jeri_Dee -

    I am with you on that!  TiVO is THE BEST!!!!!!!!!  And I just had that issue the other night about watching a third channel while taping 2 other shows.  It turned out that my third channel was HBO though and the show In Treatment is on HBO on demand, which I happen to have, so I marothoned watched that show on Saturday.  I should have told 17 year old self I was going to be a big fat loser, ha ha, but I wouldn't want to depress the kid.

  • You're missed, is everything ok with you?!!

  • @soonaquitter - Thanks, just have a lot going on, I'll blog soon.  Maybe today

  • That is great, Laura!  If only we could have known then what we know now ... *sigh*

  • Well!

    I haven't been by in a while.  Hell, I've even blogged more recently than this!

    My main question:  are you OK?  I care.

  • I hope you have a great weekend!

  • Where are you?

  • @twoberry - I too have noticed that it has been way too long for a note from Mom of Jen and Matt.I do hope Laura is doing all right. There are a couple of possibilities that she is writing a gigantic novel, doing some intense work at the place she works at, caught flack for some of the things she typically has done or just taking a huge break.

    For goodness sakes not only do I miss her, I am worried about her also...

  • @DaBombMom2 -

    that's for sure

    @twoberry -

    I'm fine, thanks, just a lot of stress right now

    @browneyed_lady - Thanks

    @evagarringer -

    Stressing and doing stressful things

    @PPhilip -

    Aww thanks, I'm fine, just busy/stressed

  • Wow i like the letter to self !!! Im sure i will be doing that when i get on up in the ages... Inspiring! Yet painful! well for me anyways! I dont really want to grow older. But I know its coming! Great post

  • man im 17 now, i wish i had a letter from my 47 year old self

  • You are so very good at this, I wish I could tell my self  how it was going to be every year ...but seriously it was a cute blog.

  • Im only 15, but i look back sometimes in the very short amount of life that i've had so far. People always say if i could have just told myself... but thanks, for some reason i feel less panicy about the small things in the future like what to wear to a party just from reading your blog. so thanks! :) but also its made me realise that i should really being doing my course work instead of xanga-ring!!!!
