  • A Jewish Easter. Eggs are on Sale.

    Some of you may or may not know that Jews have Chinese food on Christmas and see movies.  Easter is just like any other Sunday I think for most Jews.  When I was little we did color eggs because one, it was fun, two, eggs are on sale this time of year and three, my mom wanted to.   We didn't have little kits or anything, we had food coloring and vinegar.  I'm pretty sure we got Jelly Beans too ( also probably on sale) and those disgusting peeps.  Although they can be very tasty in a salad

    And my mother actually hid the hard boiled eggs we colored.  I think a couple times we didn't find them all, and mom couldn't remember all her hiding places.  You can imagine how that turned out.

    I actually believed in the Easter Bunny.  Looking back on it, I wasn't the brightest kid on the block.  I mean really, a giant bunny that actually looks like a person in a costume, comes by and does what exactly?  And how does he get in?  No one tells you that part.  And does he hop the whole way by himself?  It's all to vague.  Especially for a little Jewish kid, who may or may not have had a basket, and definitely did not get presents like her Christian friends.  But I believed anyway, which tells me I used to be either really dumb or an eternal optimist.

    I happen to like hard boiled eggs, and have recently learned to like egg salad. So this is a decent time of year for me. I like the candy too, especially now that there are actually Life Savor and Starburst Jelly Beans.  And of course the chocolate bunnies and good old peeps if your desperate.  The bad news is those are off my list as of late.  This is because of the diabetes, not the Jew thing.

    Next month is Passover.  No worries on food choices there.  Gefilte fish and horseradish?  Yeah, I'll pass.  Passover has candy too, but it's almost worse than the peeps, so I'll pass on that too.

    So basically Easter Sunday is pretty much the same as any other Sunday for us Jews.

    I wonder if the Chinese restaurant is open?

    Happy Easter or as we Jews would say Happy Eggs are on Sale week.

  • At least you get sweet wine (I've had it and I really like it). I smile upon any holiday which brings occasion for booze. I also think Peeps are disgusting. I know people who love them. Ew.

  • @squeakysoul -

    Well I can't drink the MD this year either.  @#@#$ diabetes ruins everything.

  • Dude, don't be dissin' the gefilte fish.  I love me some gefilte fish, the sweet kind, with HOT horseradish, not that wussy pink stuff they make with beets.

  • @momofjenmatt - Now that's awful. Well, there is always dry wine.

  • Dear Laura,

    One commenter wished me a Happy Easter, and then said ...."if you do Easter.". I guess I used to "do Easter." But it's been a long time. I do usually like to eat some Easter candy. I have great memories of Easter candy of old.

    Happy Channukah, er, Passover

  • We're also Jewish and we just had dinner ... Chinese food... then I came here and read your blog.  You're right on target!

  • @transvestite_rabbit -

    ewwww. Sorry but ewwww.  Expunge likes that crap I mean carp too.

  • We used to lick the peeps & toss them up to the ceiling to see who's would stick...LOL..well, until we got caught...LOL..

    We had ham today, but if I'd had my choice, I'd prefer Chinese........

  • Well, at least that makes tomorrow happy cheap candy day.

  • @SoonerRose -

    I went to expunges sisters and had Ham too.  I'm not really a ham person, but I was hungry and invited so I didn't want to be rude.

    @ronlawhouston -

    true.

  • Mmm.. Peeps salad. My kids specifically requested NO PEEPS this year.  LOL.  That means I didn't have an excuse to buy them and then eventually eat them.

  • Happy (not) Easter!  lol

  • @Get_Real_64 - you should have put them in a salad

    @soul_survivor -

    Thanks!!!!!

  • peeps in a salad? ha-ha! yuck! i ignored easter this year -- didn't even pig out on easter candy ... & boiled eggs are not on my favorites list... we had pan-fried fish, stir fry rice, & asparagus for our sunday meal...

  • I hope the Chinese restaurant was open.  I can imagine those stinky eggs.... nothing worse than rotten eggs.  We used the plastic kind for egg hunts and kept the ones we colored in our basket... maybe this is something us Gentiles figured out from years of experience with the Easter Bunny, lol!

    Have a great week.  I have company popping in tomorrow so I best get back to cleaning.

    Hugs, Tricia

  • Happy Easter Day...& thanx comment..
    I like jet corster ( few scary )..you have humore..
    Easter's food is nice !

  • My friend in Chicago always goes for Chinese food on Christmas - it's the one place that's open. She hates Easter - says she feels as if it's the days Jews are blamed for killing Jesus. So she refuses to acknowledge the day. Which is up to her - but I'm glad you get to take advantage of eggs on sale :)

  • Happy Easter!  Come on now,  Peeps ROCK!!!!  :)

  • @lalunebleue -

    hey, whatever makes you happy.  That's what it's all about.

    @pray14me -

    cleaning eww.  Ha Ha.  Did we have plastic eggs back in the olden days?  Probably.  I'm telling my mom she did Jewish easter all wrong ha ha

    @NaomiWoman -

    Thank you

    @browneyedpsycho -

    well sure if like  pure sugar marshmellow  rocks.

    @cindyjg -

    When I was little  kids did used to say I  killed God.  Seriously, me personally.  Okay?  But Easter was usually on Spring Break so  I never felt  like people were especially against the Jews that day.   But maybe they were, like I said I was a dumb kid.

  • Wow!!! that picture of you is amazing!!  The composition, lighting, and background are vunderbar!! It must have been taken by a professional photographer.

    miss picassso

  • That's pretty darned funny in a momofjenmatt way... LOL!
    Hugs, Tricia

  • Let's see, you divorced expunge and still get to visit his relatives, so maybe you get to write off Jen and Matt and he doesn't? Sounds like a good divorce reason....

    I thought if you put eggs in the salad the Peeps (chicks) would be offended? Oh wait, they are candy chicks...

    I guess since there is no Passion plays then there is less emphasis on what happened on Easter/Passover? Mel G was antisemitic to want to present the movie, the Passion of Christ...

  • I will tell you this!  After my friend fell through the cracks at the hospital (she's at Christ hospital), I've told her she is to never go in the hospital on a holiday.  If she must, then she is only to go to Jewish Hospital.  And I will no longer pray for her.  It seems that my prayers are jinxes.  If they've been helping, then I've helped keep her from death and that's about it.  The doctors are no wiser, her healing is always prolonged and complicated and delayed.  Christ Hospital might be prepping her for the happily ever afterlife?

    You Jewish folks got any better pull with the Man upstairs?  Would it help if I tell you I can't stand peeps?  Have you seen how big they grow in the microwave?

  • Curiosity.  Did the kid, who needed to poop before the test, get to take it?  Did he pass?  Did I go over the allotted number of questions for one day?

  • Ha! you are too much Laura :) love this post.*..oh, ha*.. I am laughing as I write this..** ha...an eternal optimist* ..ha..oh my goodness...no I suppose you can't compare the two holidays..although I LOVE those jelly rings.:) yum...* even the macaroons* So sorry you can't even have those :( I imagine you are being a 'good girl'..and I am glad..and pat yourself on the back..it's not easy :( Peeps in a salad* ha...only you** my friend...only you:) ha..I also love horseradish..but I pass on that fish..love matzo ball soup...used to make it for my sons...along with the jelly rings:) they all come out at this time of the year** Well I hope you had a great Sunday whatever you did...and I think dying eggs is just dying eggs..it's fun..for everyone...gee..that sounds like a commercial...:( well you know what I mean...I take the good parts of any holiday and use them:) ha...thanks for the smile/laugh....big hugs.and..lots of love, Lee ps you reminded me...the eggs were NOT on sale where I live..in fact they took advantage, knowing people HAD to buy them and upped the price:)

  • shaloha my friend!

  • I'm Christian as you know, but we tried going out for Japanese last night & our first choice place was closed.  So we ended up at the Japanese buffet & it was packed, but mostly with Asian people.  No ham, No Spam but a lot of sushi.

    Tanks for coming to see da show the other night, even tho we didn't get to talk much.

    J

  • Don't feel bad.  I believed there really was an Easter bunny, too!

    Peep Salad?  Hmmm .. I'll have to try that next year, even though I'm not a fan of the sickening sweet treats!!  I guess the lettuce will help minimize the sweetness of the peeps!

    Happy Monday, Laura! Alicia

  • @wallysquish -

    ha ha.  Yes, it was thank you.  Is that all you have to say about this wonderful entry?

  • @pray14me -

    thanks

    @PPhilip -

    Mell G sucks

    @Owain_Gwynedd -

    Hummm Pul with the man upstairs?  I don't think so, but we do have A LOT of Jewish doctors and a big percentage seem to be quite good, so you might want to check out any old hospital and look for a doctor with stien or berg on the end of their name.  Good luck to your friend.  Oh the kid passed the test and his urge to poop passed too. ha ha

    @priorities -

    Your kidding?  Full priced eggs?  I'm so sorry for you.  Great to see you over here.  I'll come visit you soon.

    @coffeeguru314 -

    did you mean Shalom?

    @jnm123 -

    The show was great, sorry I bailed early.  What kind of Christians are you people?  I'm disappointed.

    @DaBombMom2 -

    Yeah, just throw a lot of dressing on it ha ha.

  • Our chinese restaurant was open.  Happy Eggs on Sale.

  • Now that is a very strange looking salad. My kids don't do peeps anymore (thank goodness) but we heard recently that if you microwave a peep for a few seconds it a) expands and gets really big and b) is supposed to be good -- although I question how adding heat will improve peeps as they are just pure sure and food coloring, but none the less I bough a small package of three in order to try this out. We're adventurous like that though......

  • I'm glad that being only part Jew, I get the best/worst of both worlds.  That crap can expensive though.

  • Grandson told me that there is something "wrong" with marshmellow  covered with colored sugar.  And he is 6 and already a genius.  I tried one for the first time this year.  He is a genius!!  But he does like Marshmellow, just not with sugar????

    This time of year is sort of like being responsible for having slaves????  I never had one and even as far as I can determine, neither did my ancestors.....And you didn't kill Jesus.....ha!  That straightens all of that out.

  • A salad with Peeps-never heard of such a thing!  I don't celebrate Easter either...

  • peeps in cabbage hmmm sweet gas almighty.  what kind of child would tell you that you killed Jesus, what a horrid child.

  • I have to say that 1 I love to read your blog and 2 you are so open about your Jewish heritage. I do not know a whole lot about the jewish religion....but would love to know more...would you care to share more or where I could find a good sourcse of information? I am a christian and just like to know about other faiths. have a great day!

  • We Unitarians always have a fun service on Easter.  We talk about rebirth and stuff like that, but hardly any of us believe in the literalness of the Easter story.  As our minister said, we Unitarian Universalists don't really know what to do with the day, but we celebrate it anyway.

    Hey!  Humor at my blog today, for a change.

    I love you, Laura.

  • Love your humor.  Gefilte fish and horseradish does sound a little unpalatable.  Have a great week.

  • Have a blessed preparation for the feast to come.  Will you be having a Seder?
    We never did anything in relation to Easter as a kid, not even egg.  But one of the days of Passover was usually Easter and the only thing I could eat at my friend's Easter dinner was the boiled eggs.  Weird...

  • Peeps ARE icky!

    I'm craving Chinese now.. thanks.

    Happy Eggs-Are-On-Sale-Week to you tooo!

  • I haven't done anything special for Easter in three years. This year I hardly even remembered it was Easter. *sigh* I miss dressing up all pretty and searching for eggs. We always had plastic ones with stuff inside. Maybe I'll ask my husband to hide Easter eggs for me and my cousin to find next year. I know she'd do it with me, lol!

  • Did you ever blow the yolks out of the eggs?  We would make a tiny pin hole in each end of the egg, stick the pin into the egg and break the yolk, then blow into the egg and have the yolk come out the other end through the tiny hole. Then you have hollow eggs that last a long time, colored, and don't turn rotten!!  Once we used white wax crayons before we colored the eggs, to try and make a design, that did not work at all. Maybe we were just a very unique family.......

  • I never knew you could use peeps for a salad?? And I thought using them in hot chocolate was creative?!

    Now I am in the mood for chinese food.........thanks.

  • hmmmm....peep salad...i bet my 16 year old would eat that....lol

    i ate at a chinese restaurant for christmas, but it's because i am a pathetic loser who never gets to see her kids because she works herself to death....:)

    Jope you are taking care

  • That salad looks icky. I hate peeps.

    I always thought the easter bunny was gay... I mean... why??? We know that Santa Claus was St. Nicholaus and there is a story there about him ending up Santa... whats the bunny's story????

    The only rabbits I like to look forward to visiting have batteries and vibrate... LOL.

  • yea i had the food coloring and vinegar too. and im not a big fan of peeps either. as a kid id put them in the microwave and watch them blow up so at least they're entertaining...

  • @konfusedwithak -

    They are fun.  I didn't have microwaves as a kid

    @bubblysox -

    ha ha ha ha.  I hear ya.

    @bradybunch07 -

    Hey again, long time no see.  I have not been around to anyones sites, so I hope your not offended.

    @Berlyblake67 -

    peeps in hot chocolate would be good.  Salad, not so much

    @MY2GIRLS26 -

    Thank you.  I think all Christians should learn about Jews a little, cause Jesus was Jewish.  I have no reason not to be open.  I like my religion and heritage.  But don't ask me questions, I'm not really that religious.  Unless it's an easy question, like  are all Jews related?  No.

    @LandofMercy -

    No, but those are pretty

    @LonaMay -

    Happy almost passover ha ha.

    @azcason -

    I wouldn't really eat peeps in a salad.  Gross

  • I grew up non-practicing-anything and my mom tried one year to hide the boiled eggs. She forgot where she put the last two of the dozen. Thankfully (?), the dogs found them for her. I used to love Peeps. Now I can stomache exactly two before the package gets stashed away in the kitchen and forgotten about until they're stale and, in my opinion, no longer edible. And, in keeping with the theme of this pregnancy, you said "egg salad" and now I must have some. I'm boiling the eggs right now.

  • HOw on earth could i be offended with you not coming to my site when i haven't even posted in almost 4 months??
