Last night
If you have been coming to my site for awhile, you may remember that expunge, the kids and I, get together with friends and go to Ravinia every year. Ravinia has concerts right smack in the middle of an affluent suburb of Chicago. As a matter of fact, when I was in high school we lived right across the street from Ravinia.
Most of the bands at the time, were symphonies, which were not appreciated on the rare nights I was stuck at home, as I could hear it clearly from my window. A little Zepplin or Pink Floyd would have been fine, but symphonies? No.Now a days, it's not so much the talent, as it is, which night works the best for about 25 people. Last night was Boz Scaggs, which was fine, but would not have been my first choice. The song most people would know would be Ledo shuffle, which I actually hate. Their other songs were good though, and the weather was perfect.
Matt and his ex fiance. They were engaged in kindergarten.
Scrabble and Catch Phrase
Homemade booze AKA: Hooch
relaxation ( and strange expressions)
a place where parents and young adults can have fun together
Not to mention GOOD FOOD. Which was brought by others. I supplied the paper products. Go me.Anyway, before Boz Scaggs came on, they opened with The Blind Boys Of Alabama, which I had never heard of.
You can see them here
I'm not sure if they were really blind, and they were way past the age of being boys, but they sounded great. One song they did was Amazing Grace, except they did it to the tune of House of the Rising Sun. That sounded great, except my mind kept singing " There is a House In New Orleans" which was annoying of my brain.
I really want to go to a black Gospel church. I wonder if they would be welcoming or if they would be like " Who that little old Jewish lady think she is comin into our church and throwing her hands all up in the air?"
But seriously, if I were to convert to Christianity, I would for sure want to be a Black Gospel Christian. They make church seem really fun and it looks like a good work out too.
I don't know what it is about black, blind, singers, but they are really good. Example Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles.
The Blind Boys From Alabama, made up for the fact that we didn't pick the Four Tops/ Temptations concert tonight, which I would have loved.
I heard Safeway was taking the boys tonight.
I wonder if they would have seen us and what they would have thought of the hooch?

Son went to an all black church in Philly. Loved it and had a great time...except it lasted for nearly three hours. He was a tadbit hungry. Most white baptists let out of church before noon to beat the lunch rush at Ponderosa!
Glad you all had a good time!
@LifeNeedsProtection@xanga - I'll have to remember to eat first then, if I decide to go.
Looks like a good time was had by all!
I've occasionally wondered the same thing about the Black Gospel Christians...but, ultimately, the whole religion part bugs me out and I forget about it. I vote you be our guinea pig! And while you're there, ask if they mind the white Atheist joining in purely for the singing and the cardio work out, please? Thanks.
Matt and ex-fiance look like it could eventually become current fiance! But I know what old friends can be like.
We have a park out here that puts on free concerts every year too, they're about to start next month...I wonder if we'll get Boz Skagg too?
I've been to a Black Gospel Church, I am Wiccan and White...they were VERY welcoming and not at all scary! Try it if you feel drawn...you don't have to convert...lol! I didn't, I just enjoyed being there.
god, catching up with your site is like catching up with a good book
glad you stopped by...
@filtered_sunlight@xanga - ha ha, will do.
@flaminredhead@xanga - nope they're to young for marriage, but when Matt becomes rich and famous, she said she's nabbing him ha ha.
@bradybunch07@xanga - OMG, that was the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me, thank you.
They would welcome you with open arms ... I swear they would! I had a friend in KC who was a Minster (not sure if that is the right word, perhaps preacher) at a BG house of worship... what an awesome place of happiness and joy it was!
Heh, I listen to radio broadcasts of black gospel church services because I love them so much. The music, the sermons, LOL, I would love to be the lone white person there...
The Blind Boys of Alabama are really good. I think they really are blind.
I Boz Scaggs. Mmm. mmmm..mmmm.
sounds like a great time! Thanks for sharing. Love the pics.
@MsCatbert2You@xanga - yeah. I cam imagine.
@Get_Real_64@xanga - yay, someone who has heard of the Blind boys. Sad for them that their blind though.
@madamzephyrus@xanga - thanks. Yep it was fun.
I bet the boys would have wanted to steal your hootch. And maybe would have asked you for some when school was back in session. If you didn't want to keep your job in the long term you could probably make a lot of money selling those boys black market hootch!
I think the Black Gospel Christians would be glad to have you! When I was in college I would go to the black church in our town on the days that I decided I didn't want to eat lunch in the cafeteria - church did not end precisely at noon, that's for sure! But it was definitely enjoyable - and I always got to see current hat fashions, which was not something I got to see at my boring white church.
I've been to Ravina twice, both times with seats in the Pavallion. I always enjoyed watching the people, and how low key or extravagant their setups are! Quite amazing. Last year, one group even had a server/butler in a full tux...and it was 90 degrees! (For the Tony Bennett concert!) Maybe next year we'll do the grass thing!! Glad you had a good time!
Looks like everyone had a great time...and Matt and his ex-fiance look like eventually they could have a future.
@evagarringer@xanga - So true about the hooch and I did not even think about the hat fashion thing, that would be a perk
@cherflip@xanga - You should do the grass thing, of course if it rains your out of luck. If it's not too popular though, you can buy tickets when you get there. Matt was supposed to work a fancy Tux Party July 19th, but can't now. I'm kind of glad, Hot as hell in those Tuxes for hours.
@brandi_shawn@xanga - ha ha, you never know.
That looks like BIG fun, seriously... but why is my future son-in-law kissing on some ex fiance girl??? Omg.... what the crap?
Homemade hooch??? Seriously????? Man... I want to live by you.
@bubblysox@xanga - ha ha, it's only on the cheek, but I'll tell him to watch it. The Evangelical Christian friend brought the hooch, you never know about people ha ha.
My mother used to walk with my sister and me a few blocks on Sunday night and we'd stand out on the sidewalk and listen to the music from the black church. Later, I was brave enough to enter in alone.
@fratmom@xanga - cool. They do know how to be passionate about Jesus.
OMG! I actually have a CD of the 4 Blind Boys from Alabama! That rendition of Amazing Grace is excellent! How funny.
I have been to black gospel churches....kind a like a concert at Ravinia...JK. Looks like fun.
@Paizleygrl@xanga - OMG, no way, well your cool factor just went up a lot.
@closethippie@xanga - It was.
I went to a gospel church in Cleveland once. It was long and hot, but awesome!! The people were throwing their arms in the air, dancing in the aisles, the music was awesome and every other word the preacher was like "can I get an amen?!" and every would shout "amen" and "hallelujah" the whole time. I admit I felt a bit out of place, but it may have just been the situation I was in while in Cleveland.......
@MorningAngel@xanga - see, that sounds so fun to me!
Hey, I forgot you were up near Chi-town. We passed through Ravinia & a lot of affluent neighborhoods while we visited my former Party Boy at the Naval base. Green Bay Road tour. Such a nice diversion from I-94 traffic blues.
Hehe... that's cool... the black churches I've been to, all seem to be very welcoming. I should mention, that I'm young, female, blond-haired, blue-eyed, and paler than a sheet of notebook paper
