The Ramseys
If you live under a rock, then this will be the first your hearing the news that John and Patsy Ramsey have been cleared, once and for all, of their daughter's murder.
Personally, I never thought they did it in the first place. Not that I'm the best judge, I was the only one on the planet who believed Susan Smith and her crocodile tears.
But I really paid attention to this case, because Jon Bonnet was not much younger than my own kids when she was murdered. Sure her name was weird, as was her little beauty queen thing. But if that were a crime, we would have to arrest all of Hollywood.
I really felt bad for the mother, because I could obviously relate to her the most. And sometimes I would let my mind wander to the dark place that became her life. What if my child was killed in my home? Would I be able to pass a lie detector test? Even if I had nothing to do with it. I mean what if you felt guilty, for leaving the door open or something, wouldn't that show up as deception? What if it happened on a day when you were really angry at your kid, and you felt like killing them, not really killing them, but you know what I mean.
And the hand writing analysis? They always said that note, left by the killer, was most like the mothers. I mean how do you disprove a statement like that? All while your trying to find the person who did murder your little girl! While your grieving ,and people are looking at your nine year old son, as a murderer.
Now they're very sorry. Patsy Rams is dead. She died of cancer. Can you even imagine how her last years were?
I don't think sorry covers it.
I found this in one of the articles I read,
"We have a great national database that's been set up; it's been in
place for a number of years with very little population in it. There's
a huge backlog of DNA samples from crimes scenes and some states submit
samples, some states don't."John Rams had a message for lawmakers.
"For those that will have the authority and the power to pass this DNA
legislation I think is so important. . . It just hasn't gotten on the
radar in a lot of state legislatures, and it needs to be there.If I was John Rams, I think my language would be a lot stronger than that.
It's bad enough that there are baby killers and molesters out there. It would be nice if one of these high profile cases were handled correctly.
No family should be under an "umbrella of suspicion" for years after they have lost a child.
Especially, when we have the technology we have today.
Do you find yourself buying into what the media and police in these high profile cases tell you?

Jon Benet was about the same age as my oldest, which means she would be about 18 years old now if she had lived. Can you believe that it took them this long to exonerate them? I always felt sorry for Patsy, especially.
I think the Boulder police were a bunch of idiots. Granted, they probably never had a case like this before, but wouldn't you think they'd be extra careful to make sure they got it right, rather than jump in right away and make assumptions? And the media was worse, hyping the story forever and painting them as guilty. I can't imagine how painful it would be to be accused of doing that to your own child. Unfortunately, even though they were publicly cleared, there will always be people, because of the hype of the case, who think they did it. Because, of course, the clearing of them is not a big a story as when the media thought they were guilty, so it's one announcement in the news, and that's it. Sad, isn't it?
@Get_Real_64@xanga - actually, I can believe it, it's disgusting.
@WakeUpLaughing@xanga - I agree 100%
I'm careful what I buy into coming from the media. It's their job to look for most scandelest angle and hype it for all the ratings it's worth. Maybe things would be different if the people working in the media had a spine or if we the people weren't such a heard of sheep, so willing to cling to the drama for all it's worth, flattening our noses against the TV screen. But it is what it is and there's no way to really change it...and that's very sad to me.
I never thought they did it. I didn't see how they could have. But, like you said, I don't see how some parents can do the things they do... What about the Texas couple that killed the boy and then threw his body across the room after the fact? Or the lady here in Florida that threw scalding water on her little boy on Christmas Day and then left him sit there in pain for a week before taking him to the hospital where he died of his injuries? Thinking of him still makes me cry now, years after reading the story. Our baby isn't even here yet. We don't even know if it's a boy or girl. We haven't seen his or her face. And I just can't imagine what kind of monster hurts a child, let alone their own child.
I also understand what you mean about passing the lie detector tests... We haven't installed a security system; partly because of cost and partly because of that false sense of security that most people have about thier homes until something does go wrong. If our baby were born and taken, I'd feel guilty for not spending the $45 a month for the alarm. If I forgot or was coming back from a Christmas party as they were and was just too tired to walk the extra 30 steps and punch in the code to alarm it, I'd feel guilty. Heck, as small as our house is, I'd feel guilty for not hearing the intruder myself. I'd fail. And the media would have a field day shouting, "SHE DID IT!" from the roof tops amidst my guilt for not preventing it. Poor Patsy.
It's not like is a new thing and it certainly won't die out with this case. But--JMHO--with the advent of the 24 hour a day news channels, the phenomenon of filling time with this sort of speculation, innuendo, and flat out gossip has gotten worse. If it bleeds, it leads. If it smells, it sells. And damned be the reputation trashed or the case corrupted for the almight lead.
@filtered_sunlight@xanga - I never hear the burn story, that is so amazingly sick. Poor baby.
@RedHairedCelt@xanga - very ture.

For whatever reason (perhaps low-drama...there was no question who did it, etc.), it didn't get a whole lot of coverage. I had to hunt for this follow up:

Which brings another question that my co-worker and I were discussing a few weeks ago - how many black missing children, women or murdered children can you name without a second thought? And how many white missing or murdered kids and woman can you name? A case will also get more attention if those involved were white. Bonus points for attractive white people like Jon Bonnet and Jennifer Kesse.
@filtered_sunlight@xanga - That is so true, in fact I almost brought that up, but this blog was getting a little long.
my kids were still at home and two of them slept in their own rooms downstairs so I never really got vocal about what I felt (superstitious I guess) but how could someone break in and do what they did while they were in the house. they had to know the person. and why the delay in not finding her until the cops arrived? if my kid were missing i would have looked in every nook and cranny in the house. sorry i still think they or one of them is connected to the crime. i remember the female cop's testimony that they prayed. What? you prayed before you searched the house. uh uh. the proper method is praying while you search! one of them is connected to this crime.
@kulamulla@xanga - well I don't remember the exact details like you seem to, but since they have been exonerated now, after all these years, then I think I'll go with that. I'm not sure I believe the female cop, since the cops messed up the whole investigation.
I think the media also is swaying what you might be thinking. I have slept through ton's of things. And that Elizabeth Smart was taken out of her home without the parents knowing.
@momofjenmatt1 -
yeah i know people sleep through things and stuff happens which is why i didn't talk about what i felt. but i'm not buying this exoneration thing...something isn't right about the whole case.
@kulamulla@xanga - No, don't get me wrong, you have a right to your opinion, I just think often times the parents in these cases are innocent, but they are tried and convicted in the media and the public. Now OJ. who did have a trail, guilty as sin.
I never trust any sector of society that can legally exercise power, control and manipulate the media in the process.
@Carpus06@xanga - wow!!!!!
No I would not have been as nice as John. I did not know who killed thier little girl, but it was all a horrid tragedy, and the media should be ashamed for the circus they turned this into.
@stixandstonz@xanga - agreed, if he is indeed innocent, and i think he is, then he has handled it well.
@momofjenmatt1 -
Truly the innocent get victimized and the guilty go free. Dateline, 20/20, 48 Hours Mystery, and Primetime are making a living on it.
