  • Humor

    And now folks, it's another entry from : drum roll: the blog ring : play music:  Featured Grown ups!
    The topic is humor.  What makes me laugh etc..
    Well first let me tell you what does not make me laugh, most jokes that are NOT told by a stand up comics do not make me laugh.  Either I don't get it, or I don't think it's funny.  Like the "there were two guys in a bar" ones, I may chuckle, but usually it's like, huh?

    My favorite comedian is Ellen Degeneres.  I like Ellen because she takes everyday things and makes them funny.  That is my favorite kind of humor.  She says things we have all thought about and just presents them in a funny way.  Her HBO special Here and Now is hysterical.  If you have not seen it, rent it, or you tube it, it's REALLY funny.

    Shows I liked and thought were funny, were Cheers, Friends, Will and Grace, Seinfeld, I love Lucy, All in the Family, Mary Tyler Moore Show, and the Dick Van Dyke Show, just to name a few.  I enjoy funny books too, a couple favorite authors are David Sedaris and Laurie Notorno.
    I have been told I am funny.  This is almost as good as being good looking or thin.  People who have no sense of humor pretty much just suck as human beings.

    I enjoy humor where people laugh at themselves, their race, gender, weight, looks, religion, etc...
    A pet peeve of mine is when people take themselves too seriously.  I also enjoy satire and spoofs.
    I used to love the old Carol Burnett show, when they made fun of Gone with the Wind.  Or the old Saturday night Live show, with Gilda Radner and John Belushi and Steve Martin.

    I love shows like Candid Camera and The Jamie Kennedy show, because " real" people are often the funniest of all.

    Funny xangans are my favorite to read.  A funny blog often makes my whole day.  I wish there were more of them.
      A good laugh is one of the most underated things on earth .

    I love to make people smile and I love laughing with and sometimes, I admit, even at people.

    I am sarcastic and enjoy sarcastic people.  It annoys me when people don't " get" me, but I am trying to be more tolerant about that.

    Humor is a gift and THAT is nothing to laugh about.

  • I watched the Carol Burnett on YouTube and couldn't stop laughing. Now those were good times and great laughs. And I Love Lucy still cracks me up!!

  • @LifeNeedsProtection -

    Yeah, TV. has gone down hill the last few years.

  • I love Robin Williams. Ellen is funny too.

  • I liked all those TV shows, too, but I don't know about the authors you listed.  I am not sure who Notorno is, and for some reason, I do not find David Sedaris amusing.  I know, I know, everyone who's anyone is on that bandwagon, but I just can't seem to get it, and I've really tried.  At this point I accept that he eludes me.

    You do a great job of writing humorously!

  • I loved this line in your blog: "People who have no sense of humor pretty much just suck as human beings."

    And I also loved this one: "I enjoy humor where people laugh at themselves, their race, gender, weight, looks, religion, etc..."

    This one, too: "Yeah, TV. has gone down hill the last few years."

    I love humor and I love to laugh, I mean really side-splitting laughing. Wish I could have chosen three upbeat, funny lines, but those three above so much describe today's world. There are so many cases where the younger generation look at the old TV shows and find them hilarious when compared to today's TV. If it wasn't for laugh tracks, today's shows would have little to no laughs.

    Example: "Good morning." (laugh track) "Wassup" (laugh track) Seen George? (laugh track) And so it goes...

  • I should work on my humor more then....

  • I think black comedians and fat comedians are the funniest!!  I need to see a fat, black comedian!!  LOL!

    I'm with you, I don't laugh too much at regular people's jokes.  Most people don't translate them too well.

  • I loved the Sat night line up from '74   All in the Family ,  M*A*S*H* , Mary Tyler Moore,  Bob Newhart Show,  Carol Burnett Show
    That was comedy!

  • *applause*

    I think your the xangan who most makes me laugh!

  • Loss of the ability to laugh at themselves = answer to what is wrong with the world today

  • Hey, when you get a response to your plural wives add, let me know, because I too am looking for a wife to clean my house and watch my children and have sex with my husband when I'm not really in the mood. It just sounds to me like we are looking for the same thing in life and I thought I'd piggy-back (no weird sexual innuendos intended there...) on your efforts. (-:

    I think you are a funny lady. That's why I keep coming back - your sarcastic humor cracks me up! I think the blog with the titles on the Biloxi Blues photos with Pants references is one of my favorite blogs of all time. Speaking of pants, have you ever read any of the Georgia Nickelson books? "Stop In The Name Of Pants"? Pants play a major part in the humor of the last few of them.

    Okay, TIME FOR BED. I am very tired. Keep up the funny blogs! (But no pressure. just do what you do best. (-: )

  • Carole Burnett! I forgot about her -- that was the BEST show! I'm sarcastic too, and it's hard to make that come across in writing. Many don't get it and I often abandon it on my xanga. You do it really well though. Of course maybe that's because I'm sarcastic and expect it out of others, so I pick up on it. Hmm.... I guess we'll never know. Great entry!

  • @TheTheologiansCafe -

    Sometimes Robin is too crazy, but yes, I like him too

    @suzyQ_darnit -

    WOW, I think David is WAY funnier than me. Lori wrote I thought you would be prettier, try that one and tell me what you think.

    @dsullivan -

    yes, I can't think of any current sitcoms/shows that REALLY make me laugh hysterically. Not that Friends and Will and Grace are that old, but still... I loved on Friends when they went back in time and Monica was really fat and Rachel was really nerdy. But the really old shows I mentioned, classic TV.

  • @edlives -

    no, don't be silly, we all have something to offer here. I just don't make it around to enough people

    @Low_Mom - </fat people in general tend to be funny.

    @seedsower -

    yeah, and nobody was worried about being politically correct

    @Featured_Grownups -

    ahhh shucks thanks Bill your pretty funny yourself

    @flaminredhead -

    yay, thank you, that makes me happy

    @longtimelurker -

    one of the biggest things that's for sure

    @evagarringer -

    THANK YOU, that was so flattering. If I don't like some of the couples I get in my adds I'll send some your way and see if your happy with any of them, or maybe you could just steal the wife for yourself, if she is a wiz at housekeeping.I will have to check out your author ( no I had not heard of her) tHANKS AGAIN, THAT MADE ME FEEL REALLY GOOD.

    @azcason -

    tHANKS, THAT'S BECAUSE YOUR SMART. Dumb people don't get us.

  • My brain's a bit fuzzy now, but a very good, funny book is ...ummm, (here comes the fuzzy part) sumthin' sumthin' Sweet Potato Queens. Maybe you've read it? :)

  • @MaggieNellie59 -

    thank you and yes, I think I did read that. It was a funny southern book I think ( I am fuzzy too) but I love those.

  • @momofjenmatt -

    Oh, I thought I should clarify, the author is Louise Rennison and her character's name is Georgia Nickelson. The first book is called "Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging". I have given it to several friends of mine and they've all thought it was pretty funny. Pants don't show up for a few books, but they are all funny and worth reading, I think.

    I like the idea of just stealing a plural wife. I'd rather be the first wife in any case. Precedence and queen of the castle and all that.

  • I love all those shows and most of the funny people you have mentioned........You in fact make tons of people laugh in most of your views on things in general.......People can relate to your way of writing!!!!!!!!!

    Pierce was a good singer in Mama Mia!

  • Dear Laura,

    I see you're not on the "Momaroo" blogsite anymore. Hope that you and Xanga are getting along all right.

    I just read the last three or four of your entries (since the last time I was here, as usual.) It's interesting reading about what people think is funny. I read the topic, but as usual lately, I don't think I'll participate.

    They should put the Carol Burnett Show on DVD with whole seasons. I'd also love to see the "American Scene Magazine" Sunday night show Jackie Gleason hosted in the 60s.

    My favorite all time comedians are the Marx Brothers. I can still watch one of their old movies sitting alone in a room and I'll laugh out loud.

    I was reading some so called "humorous" blogs on Xanga over the past six or so months, but found that soon even the funniest writers started to repeat themselves after a while, and what passes for "sarcasm" is sometimes just too mean spirited for me.

    Michael F. Nyiri, poet, philosopher, fool

  • @baldmike2004 -

    I think sarcasm can work both ways: it can be mean-spirited or humorous, depending on how it's delivered--or taken.

  • @oh_mother_may_I -

    sorry but pierce SUCKED. I love him and he is a damb good looking guy, great actor, but singer, not so much. Thank you for the compliment though

    @baldmike2004 -

    Maybe sarcastic was the wrong word, irony perhaps. Either way I like wit. Something that REALLY bugs me about humor blogs, is that some ( not mentioning names) CLEARLY plagiarize, and lie. Slight exaggeration is one thing, total BS. pisses me off.

  • I often find myself laughing at your posts! You are funnier than most stand up comedians.

  • My mom loves Steve Martin. She thinks he's hilarious. So any time she sees him in plaid or something she has to reminisce about when he was on Saturday Night Live.

  • I'm glad you came back to Xanga.
    Cheech & Chong.  Up in Smoke.  Smoking labrador sh*t.  Funny funny.

  • You've definitely got the gift.  Thanks for sharing it.

  • @pulling_my_hair_out - OMG, thank you, wow.  @DiscordInTheGarden - he was a wild a crazy guy ha ha@Owain_Gwynedd - I loved Cheech and chong, but I smoked a lot of pot back then so I could relate,

  • @fishster - Thank you, that makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

  • Here, here and ditto to ALL the above except stand-up.  I love old Cosby stand-up, Brian Regan,John Pinnet, Margaret Smith, and the Hot Pocket comedian- can't remember his name.

    I wonder why the original Bob Newhart Show with Suzanne Pleshette isn't in syndication on any of the channels I get.

  •  A good laugh is absolutely the most underated thing EVER. its rare that i find something that makes me laugh till my face is red,i have tears in my eyes, my ribs hurt and if its really funny i have to pee. Well put!

  • I also am a big Ellen fan. She always makes me laugh. My own humor tends to be on the sarcastic side also. Maybe that's why I love to read your stuff so much. I am your fan for life. :)

    Sorry I've been gone a while. My life has been upside down for the last 2 weeks. Glad to see you're back on Xanga! Your stuff hasn't been in my subscriptions though... I'm guessing that I'll have to resubscribe.

  • @coffeeiv - no, I love stand up, I don't like regular people telling dumb jokes.  I loved Bob Newhart, great show.

    @DKeilez - peeing in your pants laughing is the best

    @madamzephyrus - Thank you 1,000 times over and glad to be back with the xangans I love.  I am having the hardest time fitting xanga in, so I hear ya.

  • Yea ... I wish just once someone would swap you're funny with You're sexy... but it would ahve to be sincere and that ain't gonna happen but if they said it --- it woudl be funny so does that count?

    HUGS

  • Funny is SO much better than thin!

  • David Sedaris is hilarious. His books are some of the only ones that I've ever laughed aloud about!

  • Oooo who are the funny Xangan's you read?  You seem to be getting a good wrap yourself.

    Well done, on the humor post.

    x

  • It IS good when people take the time to try to be funny in their blogs!
