How to get a job
Well that was a misleading title because if I knew how to get a job, Jennie would have one. We just found out today that a job she was more than qualified for didn't even grant her an interview. She is taking it personally. She wonders what she is doing wrong, she has read me her cover letters and they are pulitzer prize winning ( well, I'm exaggerating but I'm the mom). This particular job involved working with kids less fortunate than she. I decided it's her school. They must think she is elitist.
I don't think I am going out on a limb here to guess that the majority of Northwestern Students have money. Not that all snobs have money or visa versa but this job may think that is the case. I want to call the job and explain how we are not rich, I want to tell them that Jennie and I actually share a bedroom, which is much like many poor people in the country. Yes, we have two bathrooms, but no tub, just a shower.
I discussed a new game plan with Jennie and we feel the best thing for her to do is change her name. Jennifer expunge ( not her real last name) may not be what they are looking for. She is going to change her name to

And although she can't lie about the school she attended ( a good school by the way) she can mention that she peed outside in Africa and lived in a hut. This will give her a good school AND let people know she can relate to poor bathroom and living situations. She can tell them that although she is cultured in many ways, she watches just as many trash shows as the rest of us. Yes, she's pretty but she struggles with her weight AND I have personally seen a zit or two. Furthermore, she can mention that her grandparents have money in case they do want someone with money, BUT, her mom (me) is right there on the poverty line. Her dad ( expunge) is not college educated and her mom ( me) works below what her educational level would indicate.
I thought the Phi beta summa Cum laude would work in her favor but maybe they think she is too smart. I was thinking that she should add how many dumb things she has done. This way she won't appear too smart. Lets face it, some people are intimidated by bright people because they themselves are stupid. And Jennie soon to be

In this job market all that matters is how much experience you have or who you know. She should talk to the Career Services dept at Northwestern, they'll go over her resume, cover letters and interview skills with her. Or they should. Or they're not worth the money spent.

I know she'll hate it but she should let the Bubbe and/or Papa use their connections. Or she should register on LinkedIn.com. Everyone I know networks here. She needs to find out who the hiring managers are and then see if she knows someone who knows them. And by the way. IT's NOT PERSONAL. Sometimes they have computers that just scan resumes for buzz words.
@lizbeth62 - she knows that, but you know how she is. She said she is already on Linkedln, we are just going to do the name change thing. bubbe and PaPa have been talked to, so far nada from them. PS. Bubbe bday tomorrow

I haven't had to get a job in years so I am no good to you. I think the name change is definitely the kind of creative thinking that gives results, though! If I know anyone who can come up with a clever solution, it's YOU!
@miss_order - awww thanks!!!!! I also have not gotten a job in years and the one I have now, the criteria was being alive ha ha.
I don't think it's has much to do where she attended (In some cases). More so if one is more qualified than the job is. Because (as a boss which I was once) the more you are qualified the better you will high tail it out as soon as something more better comes along. They want people whom will stick longer. Once I applied for a office job, my skills for data entry was really good and they flat out told me they wouldn't hire me because I was too good, and I would leave after they would train me on everything (probably would). The job market stinks at this point. Believe me a lot of people aren't moving around looking for that one step better of a job.
At least she didn't take a test where the test results were declared invalid due to it being biased against minorities

You need the patience of a Saint these days to find a job. Good luck to Jennie and I hope she gets a job that is a good fit for her.
@Baroness_Fritinanci - That's a good point they may think she will leave to go to grad school. But they could at least interview her and find out if she is going right away ( which she is NOT)

she is not alone! my son graduated in May with a degree in law enforcement/criminaljustice/public administration magna cum-laude. not from NW btw but from a decent state university. so far he has been offered every marketing position in the state. ie make phone calls from our call center & if you sell something then we pay you. she is not alone!!!! the job market plain old sucks. if he could get another loan he'd go back for his masters just to say he was "doing" something. but alas no more $$$$ for students avaliable. has she considered signing up with a temp service just to try and get a foot in the door somewhere?
@illgrindmyownthankyou - oh trust me, I know she is not alone. It sucks!!!!! Has your son looked into being a PO? Or can't you even get those anymore? Or did he more want to be in the administrative realm? I feel SO blessed to have a job!!!!!!
